Every maxim may not apply to all individuals, but regardless of personal beliefs, one will very likely find this guide adaptable/applicable to their daily mode of being.Many thanks to Sam Torode for putting this manual into clear, easy-to -understand language. It was a great quick read and I look forward to re-reading, as well as reading Book #2 in the series, 'The Meditations - A Philosophers Guide', and the authors' other translation of some classic works. Having these editions of these two books is great if you're anything like me and needed a more accessible version of the philosophy, esp. as a newbie to this arena of thought. Highly recommend.

Its a short and simple abridged version of the philosophy of stoicism and if your even slightly curious this book is a great intro but often go back to some passages that stood out to me. It's definitely worth it's price and goes hand in hand with "The Meditations."

About the Author

Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1817. He graduated from Harvard in 1837, the same year he began his lifelong Journal. Inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau became a key member of the Transcendentalist movement that included Margaret Fuller and Bronson Alcott. The Transcendentalists' faith in nature was tested by Thoreau between 1845 and 1847 when he lived for twenty-six months in a homemade hut at Walden Pond. While living at Walden, Thoreau worked on the two books published during his lifetime: Walden (1854) and A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849). Several of his other works, including The Maine Woods, Cape Cod, and Excursions, were published posthumously. Thoreau died in Concord, at the age of forty-four, in 1862.W.S. Merwin has published many highly regarded books of poems, for which he has received a number of distinguished awards—the Pulitzer Prize, Bollingen Award, Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets and the Governor's Award for Literature of the state of Hawaii among them. He has translated widely from many languages, and his versions of classics such as The Poem of the Cid and The Song of Roland are standards.William Howarth is Professor Emeritus of English at Princeton University. His thirteen books on literature and history include The Book of Concord: Thoreau's Life as a Writer, Walking with Thoreau, and The John McPhee Reader. As "Dana Hand" he collaborates with Anne Matthews on fiction and film, and as co-publishers of Scarlet Oak Press.

This little book has a big heart and is well worth reading on your Kindle. I have some printed versions, but recently had the opportunity to visit Walden pond (a state reservation) near Concord, MA, and loaded the Kindle version on my Kindle Fire as I could then read it without having my book suffer travel wear and tear. So I took the train from Boston, somewhere close to Harvard University, towards Concord, and spent the day walking the pathways surrounding the pond. I could read the book and search for matching descriptions of the pond area as described by Henry Thoreau. That was a lot of fun. The train line still runs on its original track, and you can imagine Henry listening to the whistle and seeing the smoke of the train. The park and pond is beautiful, and combined with the book and Henry Thoreau's stories, transfers one back in time to another world, a world that was both different and similar to the world that we know. There is a life-size model of Henry Thoreau's cabin (he lived in this cabin for 2 years and 2 months, and started construction late March 1845) in the parking lot across the road, and construction has started on a new visitors centre. It was a wonderful experience to actually feel like I was there with Thoreau at Walden Pond. The way he studied and described simply living and the appreciation of nature fits right into my values. I loved having insight to a life that took place so many years ago through his eyes, and with his mind and heart. He expresses his beliefs about life and society so eloquently. At times he goes into great detail in his observations, but then masterfully makes a valid point that is truly inspiring. This is a book that really makes you think about the purpose of our existence in this world, our values, and how we should live.

I first read "Walden" in a freshmen seminar course in American Lit, and it was quite daunting reading at the time. Thoreau seemed an over-rated author: he darts from topic to topic with little to no transition, he quotes obscure passages, he sermonizes. And perhaps most frustrating of all, he wants his writing to be ambiguous (see for instance, Chapter 18), and for an assiduous college student eager to absorb and analyze, this can be quite an overwhelming experience. So, I got very little of Thoreau at the time.Ten year's later, I decide that I would pick "Walden" up again. I told myself that I would stop whenever the reading became too discursive or abstract... And I did not stop until I reached the end!As any student of early American lit. knows, Thoreau built a small house for himself in the woods of Walden Pond in Concord, MA, where he lived for two years (1845-1847), documenting his experiences living there in "Walden." He hoed beans for a living, lived a mile from his nearest neighbor and survived on the absolute minimum that he could. In his downtime, he would swim, fish, read and take in his surroundings, describing every sight and sound with the utmost care. Thoreau creates for his reader an unforgettable Nature-observing experience with such richness of detail that we feel we are right there with him. We hear the owl's cry, we witness the loon diving into the pond and the two ants going head-to-head in battle, we see the blue of Walden Pond. He is a student of Nature of the highest order and extracts from each of these experiences a parable about humanity: what we lack and how we can be free. For Thoreau, Walden Pond is a place of purity, an oasis, an Eastern paradise on earth, a Ganges.An ardent non-conformist, Thoreau also uses this book as a sounding board for his "radical" views and practices. He detests the railroad and its encroachment upon his land (and more generally, that of technology on human and animal life). He refuses to pay taxes to a government that supports slavery and the Mexican War (for which he is briefly imprisoned during one of his sallies to the village). He prefers Eastern spirituality and meditation to Western religiosity. He spurns the high life and abstains from drinking and eating meat. He believes that man is in a dormant intellectual state, from which he can one day rise and embrace the dawn. And the list continues...Thoreau's prose is also rather unique. What one must remember is that he is faithful student of Emerson and like Emerson, his paragraphs often contain non sequiturs, digressions and sometimes outright contradictions. It was perhaps this lack of logical linearity that initially kept from enjoying his work as a college student. We must be indulgent with Thoreau: his wit, his aphorisms, his acumen are well worth the sometimes uncomfortable task of deciphering his prose. I am very glad that at nearly the same age as Thoreau, I took a journey to Walden Pond with him.

Review of ANNOTATED EDITION, not of Thoreau's work. Potentially great idea. Many of the annotations were superficial or unnecessary, although others helpful. Biggest problem with this is the printer's layout, which has two careless oversights: size and position on page. Two pages of text have been squeezed onto a single page (to allow the side-by-side commentary), resulting in tiny print. Tough on anyone over 40. Then, the printer left wide margins on the *outside* of the page, and squeezed Thoreau's text into the binding. Really foolish use of the available space.The result is something that could have been fascinating being just plain awkward and unsatisfying to handle and read.

I have to admit I am a bit shocked by some of the critical reviews. This book is a crash course in how to clean out a house top to bottom while being mindful of what is valuable or potentially valuable over what should be recycled or donated. The author takes a realistic straight forward approach a give numerous suggestions on how to unload an estate or downsize. He gives suggestions on how to handle and large estate over a small home. There are tips to maximize your profits at yard sales. When to hire auction houses or estate sale companies. Yes, some of the information presented may be common sense but I found many ideas in the book creative and a worthwhile consideration. Anyone with knowledge of selling used items knows "Something is only worth what some else is willing to pay for it." I think the author does a fantastic job of setting up realistic expectations for sorting thru a lifetime of items. I read this book cover to cover and found it a much more enjoyable read than I expected.

This is the book I should have bought to start with. It's an excellent outline of options for disposing of "stuff" that is no longer wanted, whether yours or part of an estate. I think his timetables are optimistic, and he admits as much -- simply exploring some of the alternatives, like local auctions, can take most of the time in a deadline-shortened timeframe. But after working through one estate recently (not completely done) and anticipating at least one more, I found his process to be logical, well-explained and accompanied by a lot of helpful resource suggestions.

A book that addressed the very concerns I had about getting rid of collectibles and such. I have underlined important facts and refer to it as I go through a house of many items which I want to decided about as far as selling, keeping or tossing. It is not a book of fluff in order to sell a book but a book of important information that is not easily found elsewhere.

Excellent book on dealing with downsizing. the first four chapters give great insights for anyone suffering a lost loved one and have to reduce the amount of clutter in their lives.

Lots of information but also lots of what I used selectively. Overall a good book to have when trying to decide what to keep or get rid of.....

Got this book because my stepmom is moving to Assisted Living and we need to start clearing out her stuff and sell the house. This is a terrific book. Not only good advice, but a list of resources. He tells it like it is, and gives you several plans of action, and puts to rest many myths about how much stuff is worth.I don't think you'll look at your own stuff in the same way, after reading this book. Definitely worth the price.

Amusingly written, good advice. Hard for someone like me to actually follow through with though. Harry had trouble too!

I purchase this book to help me decide what to do with items I have collected or been passed down thru the years. I like the book very much. The book has helped me realize that an items value is not solely determined by a dollar amount. I was surprised at how good this book is. Despite its significant military and political power, and well-deserved status as "the most powerful non-state military force in the world," Hezbollah remains by its own necessity and design a "shadowy" organization, and thus a challenging object for anyone wishing to research its history, structure, operational record, and military capabilities. In "Warriors of God," Nicholas Blanford, since 1994 the Beirut correspondent for "The Times" and several other newspapers and magazines, has succeeded rather brilliantly in offering as thorough a portrait of Hezbollah as we are likely to have for many years hence.South Lebanon, while ethnically diverse and topographically rugged, is not a big place, and in his seventeen years of reporting prior to "Warriors of God"'s 2011 publication, Blanford has ranged all over its varied landscape, usually while covering the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. He has also gained access to a diverse body of Hezbollah members, from part-time militiamen and full-time fighters, to an interview with the head of Hezbollah himself, Hassan Nasrallah, and various other officials.Blanford follows the arc of Shiite history in the Jabal Amil region (roughly today's South Lebanon) from the Middle Ages to Lebanon's independence in the mid-1940s, and into the 1970s-'80s when the marginalized Lebanese Shiites sought more effective representation in Lebanon's confessional political system. Hezbollah emerged in this latter period as a Shiite militia in the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990) more closely aligned with Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini than the mainstream Shiite militia, Amal. But Hezbollah found its real purpose with Israel's 1982 invasion of southern Lebanon. Israel succeeded in ousting the PLO from Lebanon in 1982, and the Lebanese Shiites (and many other Lebanese sects) were grateful for this. But Israel's continued occupation of Lebanese territory engendered Hezbollah's ire, and eventually it's fervent opposition.Israel withdrew to a "security belt" of Lebanese territory along its northern border in 1985. It was in the period 1985-2000 that Hezbollah grew into a formidable military force as it sought to expel Israel and its South Lebanon Army militia allies from Lebanese land. In the 1990s Hezbollah pioneered the use of IEDs against Israeli troops, as well as enhancing its arsenal of rockets, its ground forces, and its intelligence capabilities. Facing mounting losses and increasing dissent at home, Israel unilaterally withdrew from Lebanon in May 2000.Hezbollah considered Israel's withdrawal incomplete as it still occupied a strip of territory called Shebaa Farms, which Israel and the U.N. identify as part of the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights, but which Hezbollah calls Lebanese land. This led to a low-grade conflict which culminated in the 2006 South Lebanon War, in which Hezbollah effectively countered an Israeli military ground incursion into South Lebanon, while also launching thousands of rockets into Israel and even crippling an Israeli naval vessel with an anti-ship missile, though Israel leveled blocks of apartment buildings in Hezbollah's south Beirut stronghold, destroyed other Lebanese infrastructure, and seeded South Lebanon with over a million cluster-bomb sub-munitions.In "Warriors of God"Blanford meticulously catalogs the course of this ever-intensifying conflict from the mid-1990s, offering fascinating details of Hezbollah's ever-expanding and increasingly sophisticated arsenal; its construction of extensive underground bunkers; its tit-for-tat intelligence war with Israel; and offering evidence that the next Israel-Hezbollah war will be on a level of unprecedented ferocity, with Hezbollah having now stockpiled over 100,000 missiles, many long-range with payloads of hundreds of kilograms.This book was published in 2011, and in its introduction Blanford notes the then-escalating civil unrest in Syria (along with Iran, Hezbollah's vital patron), and wonders how this conflict will affect Hezbollah. Five years on, Hezbollah, while losing well over one thousand fighters, has gained invaluable conventional combat experience and access to even deadlier weapons systems in Syria's ongoing civil war. It is safe to say that Hezbollah has played a fundamental role in propping up the Syrian regime of Bashar al Assad, and only grown stronger in the process.Blanford is a good writer whose prose is clear and engaging. As other reviewers have noted, the big flaw in "Warriors of God" is the lack of a map of South Lebanon. This is an annoying omission as Blanford is always citing this or that town or village; and while maps are a few clicks away on the internet and South Lebanon's geography is fairly easy to learn, it would be much more convenient to have a map the reader can flip to in the book's pages. Blanford is good at painting a verbal picture of South Lebanon, whether the coastal cities of Sidon and Tyre, the mountain redoubt of Jezzine, the steep slopes of Shebaa Farms and Mt. Hermon, or the crowded Shiite suburbs of South Beirut, but a map (and maybe some photographs) would be appreciated.Hezbollah, with billions of dollars from Iran, is also a provider of social services to the Lebanese Shiite community, rebuilding civilian homes damaged or destroyed in war with Israel, and paying monthly pensions to the widows and children of its killed fighters, and Blanford covers this aspect as well. But the main theme of "Warriors of God" is, as the subtitle says, "inside Hezbollah's thirty-year struggle with Israel."

This was a fantastic book. This must be read if you want to understand the issues involving the state of Israel and Hezbollah. It is a fair account of the history of Hezbollah and the Israel responses to this conflict. It points out the positives and negatives of both actors. It is common in the media to just hear one side of the story. And that side is the Israeli side and shines them in a positive light. Did you know that when Hezbollah attacked the Israeli embassy in Argentina they did so in response to the targeted killings of people in Lebanon? I didn't. The media made it sound like those Muslims were out killing innocent Jews to further the goals of the Nazi's. The truth is a little different.The media these days lumps all Muslims into the same boat. This book explains the difference between Sunni and Shia jihad. The defensive Jihad of Hezbollah and the Shia's is way more understandably than the blood thirsty preemptive jihad of the Sunni's.That still doesn't excuse Hezbollah's need to exterminate Jews. Israel, Syria and Iran meddling in the affairs of Lebanon has lead to this constant cycle of violence and attempts to one up each other.And I loved the reporting of how far back IED's and drones have been used in combat. If you listen to American media the drone was created by the U.S just for the war on terror and IED's were created just to kill U.S military members.I would love a follow up book and what has been happening in the area since the end of this work. American media can't be bothered to report on the intricacies of the region. They can just parrot Jews good Muslims bad and move on to Trump is a bad guy stories. I hunger for the inside scoop of these world altering regions and this book filled a little of the void.

Blanford has spent decades covering Hezbollah and he fills the book with personal experiences in southern Lebanon. Some might not like the book, because most of the focus is on Hezbollah and he does not portray Israel in the best light. The author doesn't sugar coat anything.

The most comprehensive, easy to read, accounting of Hizballah I have ever read. Hard to put down. A must read for anyone with serious need to learn about this organization/terror group.

Blanford is an American that is also a Lebanese patriot in the sense that he pretty much despises anyone in Lebanon with a gun that is not par tof the regular army or the polices. Most regretfully the number of people in Lebanon with guns is probably higher than it is in the States, the difference is that their assault rifles really are assault rifles, they don't just look like them.

A really fascinating study of a unique organization in the Middle East. Blanford's thorough analysis of Iran's Viet Cong could use a follow-up considering current events and Hezbollah's unabashed enforcement of Persian policy.
