These letters show a completely different side of Wollstonecraft. Rather than her usual composed, piercing arguments, these letters show vulnerability and uncertainty that shows the struggle Wollstonecraft highlights in a way that's much less academic and more poignant

This is an interesting and enlightening publication about scandinavis at that time, You have to adjust your mind to her dated grammar. English was much different when she wrote this.

Her name is misprinted on the cover. This is one of many misprints and errors

A great book, it puts you in Scandinavia in the late 1800's and you can feel the life.An excellent company that reproduces out of print books for the public.Highly recommended for the brain un-dead.

It has a rather narrow viewpoint and the judgements weigh on the reader but it reveals a time and and era both in terms of the subject and the writing.

I admit I am biased since I am reading this in an Email group called "18th Century Worlds", which perhaps give me more insight and perception into the world of Mary Wollstonecraft. But my Penguin edition of the book is very good, including as it does both Mary's "Short Residence" and the biography of her by her widowed husband William Godwin. Richard Holmes' introduction is a delight, situating the book in its context and also making the life of Mary accessible, and the relationships between Mary and the people of her day and age very interesting. So back to the text of Mary's letters. If you have ever wondered what it was like to be an active, passionate, capable and brave woman at the latter end of the 18th century, when the French Revolution and the tides of Romanticism were sweeping over Europe, and challenging Enlightenment thought-- or even if you've never given a damn-- this is an attention-grabbing and engrossing account. Provided you can get over its prose, or approach it open-mindedly (which many easily bored illiterati might not be able to), you will be struck by its poetic qualities, and by Wollstonecraft's candid emotional intensity. In the early 1790s, a poltically radical Englishwoman woman took a business trip to Scandinavia on behalf of her common-law husband, an American businessman involved in smuggling. She took with her only her young daughter, still a child, and her French maid. "Residence in Sweden" is an account of her journey written in the form of letters to the man she left behind (though this doesn't show up in the text itself, the informative introduction gives the background). Partway into her trip, she leaves her child and the nurse behind and continues on her own to regions remote and picturesque, and foreign not only to most English women of the period, but to the majority of English men as well.Wollstonecraft goes on philosopical rambles, as the images of social life and the landscape around her remind her of her experiences in revolutionary France. The text raise many questions important to the Enlightenment philosophes, about the role of women, man's place in nature, human habits and manners. Never are we allowed to forget that we are reading the words of a flesh and blood woman who feels deeply. Many of her recollections are painful, and sometimes she is depressed. But there is always something arrestingly beautiful in what she describes, some touch of the author's vivacity and the newness and intensity of her travels, to steer one away from the melancholy, or at least to make it something more sublime.I'm taking this one with me to college, and I foresee many re-readings. Holmes calls it Mary's best literary work: it has none of the bombast of her "Vindication of the Rights of Woman" but instead is something even more thoughtful and readable. For companion reading I highly recommend Claire Tomalin's "Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft".

Mary Wollstonecraft's Scandinavian journey lasted from June to October 1795. This book consists of letters to Gilbert Imlay. He was the father of her daughter. The descriptions of Sweden, Norway and Denmark she saw duringthis time are exceedingly conclusive and puts the reader there.Intrigued?A charming use of the English language {although at times genteel};nevertheless, poignantly stimulating to a fault telling what sheexperienced.Truly a classic!Dag StombergSt. Andrews, Scotland

I can't say much about this book as I don't remember buying it. It had to have been a book that my daughter needed for a college class.

As a lifelong Giants fan, someone could write "I love the Giants" over and over again on a page, chalkboard-punishment-style, and I'd probably eat it up, but this book really does bring to light many great stories, especially to younger fans, (somewhat) like myself, who only know of Frank Gifford, Y.A. Tittle, and Sam Huff from the grainy footage in NFL Films productions (miss ya Steve). In my view, to truly love a team is to understand its current players in the context of past teams great and not-so-great (see the chapters on the '70s for the latter), and this book allows fans of all ages to gain that historical perspective, with amusing anecdotes that really convey the personalities of the players, coaches, and owners. Definitely recommend to any who "bleed blue." Go G-men!

If you like the modern giants of Eli manning you will enjoy this book.I have been a giants fan since the 1960's. Those were the days ofY a tittle frank Gifford del shofner Phil king Sam huff allie shermanPat summerall and the original old Yankee stadium! Happy readingGiants fans! Aloha haleiwa jon

Tales from the New York Giants Sideline provides the professional football and Giants fan very little. It is poorly organized, provides absolutely no insight into the team, its history, and its championship seasons. Even more disappointing, given that the book is based on interviews with many past and present players and coaches, it gives little insight into the personalities that have given this franchise a unique and deep history. In short, it is a total failure. The book is divided into six chapters: Training Camp, The Season, The Founder, The Coaches, The Teammates, and The Championships. None of the chapters provide great insight on the given topic. Further, the organization of the book provides no chronological continuity as it jumps all over the place in time and era. Essentially what this book consists of are very short vignettes, in fact vignettes isn't even the right word, short snippets, that give a little nugget of information about the team and players. It's basically a little collection of quotes and comments about the chapter topics. The players, coaches, and owners that get the most air time, so to speak, are Wellington Mara, Sam Huff, Y.A. Tittle, Frank Gifford, Phil Simms, and Bill Parcels. Of course other players and events are touched upon, but not in any meaningful way. Yes, Lawrence Taylor is in here, but mostly only in embarrassing situations.Very unfortunately is that there is a little bit, but not nearly enough, about some of the most important events in Giants history. Want to know a little bit about one of the seminal games in NFL History, the 1958 NFL Championship between the Giants and Baltimore Colts (the first overtime game in NFL history)? You won't get much here. Want to know about the Giants' Super Bowl years? You won't get a lot here except a few quotes and comments. In short, you don't get much at all with this book. Thus, I would not recommend this book to a football fan or Giants fan. There is just not enough information or good storytelling here to make this book worthwhile. It is a quick and easy read, but even casual Giants' fans are not likely to learn anything particularly new or worthwhile. The author of this book has covered the New York Giants for the New York Post since 1994. The Giants have had mostly mediocre results during this time frame, this book is less than mediocre.

While it is interesting to know about the history of the team, and the stories of old coaches and players, I thought it lacked more info regarding the players of this generation.

Great quotes from the players themselves. Brief and to the point as each topic flowed to the next. Good read.

I thought this book was good for what it was. Is it a historical retrospective of the NY Giants? NO. You're not going to get that for $15, and shouldn't expect it. This is simply short, anectodal stories of various Giant personnel over the years. Each one is only a page or two in length, so it's a book you can pick up and put down, and not have to worry about remembering where you were. I'd recommend it for any Giants fan.

Football team ever.

Review

"[A] passionate and erudite pursuit of truth and beauty"—Booklist (starred review)“Intimate . . . timely . . . Figuring thunders along with a novelistic intensity, propelled by the organic drama of its extraordinary lives . . . It speaks to the quality of Popova’s own writing that it survives comparison with the literary giants of the last four centuries. Her wonderfully deft and sincere prose melts down the raw materials of heavy research into a coruscating flow of ideas, images, and insights that add skin and sinew to the bones of biographical fact to create a forward-looking history that's both timely and timeless.”—Vanity Fair"An intricate tapestry in which the lives of these women, and dozens of other scientific and literary figures, are woven together through threads of connection across four centuries . . . In Figuring, we are thrust into a waltz of exquisitely honed minds—most of them belonging to women, many of them sexually queer—all insisting on living to their fullest.”—The Washington Post"Figuring is a love letter to scientists of the past, women whose lived have all too often been eclipsed. . . striking. . . profound. . . dizzying in its scope. . . inspirational. . . There is grandeur and beauty in this view of science. . . few have so fulsomely explored how science and poetry, love and learning, and affairs of the heart intertwine in a way that, even after more than 500 pages, leaves one trembling for more. But like other affairs of the heart, the joys of reading Popova’s prose are perhaps best experienced for oneself.”—Science!"Fans of polymath Maria Popova’s popular website, Brain Pickings, will find themselves right at home in Figuring, her audacious new work of intellectual history that focuses on the lives of a coterie of brilliant women.  . . Figuring invites the reader to engage with complex ideas and challenging personalities, unearthing a wealth of material for further reflection along the way."—BookPage (starred review)“Fascinating . . . Piecing together human truths and the remarkable details of these lives well-lived into an extraordinary mosaic of human existence, Figuring reveals our timeless interconnectedness, and the inevitable, although improbable, intersections of our lives in the vastness of the universe.”—BookTrib “The polymathic Popova, presiding genius behind brainpickings.org, looks at some of the forgotten heroes of science, art, and culture . . . she peppers thoughtful, lucid consideration of acts of the imagination with stories that, if ever aired before, are too little known . . . Throughout her complex, consistently stimulating narrative, the author blends biography, cultural criticism, and journalism to forge elegant connections: Dickinson feeds onto Carson, who looks back to Mitchell, who looks forward to Popova herself, and with plenty of milestones along the way . . . A lyrical work of intellectual history, one that Popova's many followers will await eagerly and that deserves to win her many more.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“A work of alchemy . . . In her hands, biography becomes liquid gold . . . Figuring is a dense and intricate read, but Popova’s writing is clear and simple, designed to draw people in. She doesn’t obfuscate for the sake of it. The complexity is earned, even necessary for the tapestry she’s creating . . . it’s full of wonder, emotion and love . . .”—The Michigan Daily

Let me start by stating that I am in love with Maria Popova. I heard her at the 92nd street Y last year, and read Brain Pickings every Wednesday and Sunday. I am a fanboy. Thus I eagerly awaited Figuring. The book attempts to establish intellectual songlines of a diverse group of scientists and poets, mostly women, over some four centuries. The problem with the book (I am giving up on it at p93) is that most of the connections are slight at best; something along the line of... "and could it be merely coincidence that X and Y both use the conjunctive "and" in their writing, and as far as we can determine, both put salt in their soup, thus prefiguring FDA guidelines by a century...What seems to work well in short pieces which gesture at intellectual congruence falls apart in this more extended format, becoming a sort of intellectual ADHD.I will continue to read this most gifted and thoughtful author, and am sorry the current work fails me (clearly it hasn't for other reviewers)If anyone wants a pristine copy I will send it to you for the price of postage--you may have better luck.

And I have only read the first paragraph, three times.

I’ve never felt more grateful for the existence of a writer. This book is about science, humanity, love, ideas, beauty. There is a refreshing alignment of science with art, in that science is essentially organic art- that is if we judge art to be what inspires. And, it’s about the precious vulnerable smallness we get to feel when astounded by the wonder of the big sky of the anatomy of a daffodil or the upending of love. Maria Popova brings the scientist’s of wonder to life, especially women scientists, who are otherwise unknown (zest least to me). Maria Popova is a scientist of human hearts. She she holds out, with great care, for us to see, what is sweet and tender in the hearts of these greatest of minds. By humanizing their greatness, she lets us see the beautiful in every human, in myself. A main theme is beauty - the people she writes of are driven to genius when awestruck by beauty. And the theme of beauty is within Maria Popova’s gorgeous writing. Very gorgeous, inspiring, and a sense that every word is infused with profound respect and love for her subjects and for the ideas. You’d figure a book about science, poetry, history, love, and everything else human, would get bogged down. It doesn’t. It’s the smoothest read. It feels graciously offered.

The first sentence alone is worth the price of this beautiful work of art. I read it over and over, and then typed it up and sent it to a friend. I'm going to commit it to memory, it's that breathtaking. This book is a treasure. Thank you, Maria Popova!!

I don't think I've ever reviewed a book I haven't finished yet, but I feel compelled to fan the flames of this incredible offering. This book, Maria's Muse, is at once (from the first deliciously long sentence): Captivating, Inspiring, Eloquent, Whimsical and Deeply Satisfying. Like beholding and having the first taste of an authentic 11-course Chinese meal, I'm swooning with anticipation of the delights to come. As a fan of "Brain Pickings" I sense what I'm in for, yet also feel certain I'm poised for a transformational experience amidst Ponderables, Ideas and Catalystic Tidbits.

I have been a subscriber to the author's website for many months, and look forward to her superb essays, complete with long and interesting quotations and carefully chosen illustrations. In a very positive sense, her essays are very similar to the long, thoughtful and yet heavily quoted reviews that were standard fare back in the 1840s and 1850s in the United States. She has read and reviewed books online for over ten years, and almost every book was checked out of the public library. She hits the ground running with the very first sentence: "Whoever requires the suffrage of others, has at once placed his life in the power of calculation and of chance; to such a degree, that the labours of calculation cannot secure him from the accidents of chance, and the accidents of chance cannot exempt him from the pain of calculation."And continues in full stride analyzing the thought: "When, in the midst of ... attacks, the person of genius pays no attention to this ferocious mob of nobodies, “they consider this silence proof of their superiority.” The persistent existence of these patterns, De Staël argues, is evidence that while glory may be thus dependent on its contemporaries, fickle as they are in their favor, genius transcends the turbulences of current opinion and passes into a wholly different realm of significance unmoored from the tyranny of the present moment ... "Wonderful reading, wonderful analysis, a true pleasure in many senses of the words.Robert C. RossFebruary 2019A short example from her current mid-week offering:“For old people,” Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in her sublime meditation on aging and what beauty really means, “beauty doesn’t come free with the hormones, the way it does for the young… It has to do with who the person is.” But who is the person staring back at us from the mirror as the decades roll by? The mystery of what makes you and your childhood self the same person despite a lifetime of changes is, after all, one of the most interesting questions of philosophy. Perhaps the greatest perplexity of aging is how to fill with gentleness the void between who we feel we are on the inside and who our culture tells us is staring back from that mirror. That’s what beloved writer Grace Paley (December 11, 1922–August 22, 2007) addresses with extraordinary humor and intellectual elegance in a 1989 piece titled “Upstaging Time,” found in Just As I Thought (public library) — the same indispensable nonfiction collection that gave us Paley’s astute advice to writers.

A soulful and stunning dance of philosophy, art, science and life lessons. Masterful and poetic.

Superb.
