I own this book, as well as the The Ashley Book of Knots. I also own several other books on knots.I think this book is a great complement to the ABOK, because a lot of the knots in the ABOK are not very useful. The ABOK is without a doubt THE canonical reference on knot-tying, but many of the 3000+ knots are not useful and should be avoided. This book, by Geoffrey Budworth, lists many of the common knots that ARE useful on a day-to-day basis. Furthermore, the clear photos and and expanded illustrations make it much easier to follow.I am not aware of any knot-tying book that tries to replace the ABOK, but for a concise summary of USEFUL knots, this is the best one I have found.

Any good book needs to be environmentally conscious and responsible in printing. In this case, I am surprised by its overly large photos and illustrations that takes up a full page and serving no meaningful purpose. It is more for decorative than to benefit the user. So I end up with a big book (by dimensions) which could be more manageable by reducing its page dimensions and making it more handy. Absolutely unnecessary to have such large pages.

I enjoy the layout of book and history of knots, but the instructions and drawn diagrams were horrible! Why use a green arrow (to show where you pull the end through) when the rope drawing is green? I am on the 4th rope and I am completely lost! Thank goodness for YouTube...

I have problems tying anything. I have survived for decades with a shoelace knot and a square knot.Clear instructions and great illustrations have me getting more and more sophisticated in creating USEFUL tools. Rope is now a multifaceted tool, not just a length of cord. There may be others, but I find it hard to believe there is better.

Was bought as a gift. She loved it. Has already used a few of the knots. Written with easy instructions

Tons of useful information. Book is larger in size than I thought that it would be.

Being somewhat unfamiliar with knots I found this book interesting to read. Each knot has a little history behind it and many are illustrated more than once in tying. Each knot has one or more diagrams showing step-by-step how to tie it. The illustrations are at times take a little study to follow. A couple I thought weren't done completely right. This was the weakness of the book. More care could have been taken in using colors to accent the flow of tying the knots. Overall, with a little patience just on some of the knots they can be tied as shown. The knots included I thought provided a good selection and for the average person you'll have all you need. This is still a book I'd recommend.

Not a bad book. The pictures are nice and the instructions are easy to read and follow. Essential book for any person that enjoys the outdoors- hunting, campaign, hiking, boating, etc...

The Schoolhouse Gate: Public Education, the Supreme Court, and the Battle for the American Mind, by Justin Driver

Review

A Washington Post Notable Book of the YearA New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice“The Schoolhouse Gate is the first book-length history of Supreme Court cases involving the constitutional rights of schoolchildren, a set of cases that, though often written about, have never before been written about all together, as if they constituted a distinct body of law.”—Jill Lepore, The New Yorker“Indispensable . . . bold and ultimately persuasive . . . astute . . . exquisitely well timed, given President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Kennedy . . . . Driver has performed a service in assembling the stories of so many important education cases in one encyclopedic, fair and elegantly written volume. It will remain on my desk for years to come.” —Dana Goldstein, The New York Times Book Review "This meticulous history examines rulings on free speech, integration and corporal punishment to argue that schools are our most significant arenas of constitutional conflict."—New York Times Book Review, Editors' Choice"A masterful analysis of the Supreme Court’s role in public school students’ constitutional rights...Driver’s book makes for especially timely and important reading."—Eloise Pasachoff, The Washington Post"The involvement of the courts [in schools] is recounted in vivid detail by Justin Driver, who sets out to rescue them from the purgatory to which critics across the political spectrum have consigned them. Conservatives charge that the courts have engaged in “judicial activism” for progressive change, while frustrated liberals indict them for failing to promote it. . . . To Driver, the record is much more mixed than that: sometimes courts have lagged behind the rest of the country, but at other moments they have taken the lead. And they have helped expand the rights of American children, albeit unevenly and imperfectly. . . . [I]f you look at the long record of judicial intervention on matters of education, you see that the courts still matter for young Americans."—Jonathan Zimmerman, New York Review of Books  "Engaging and absorbing. . . Driver . . . calls on schools to challenge the racial and economic inequality in the broader society. He has the audacity to contend that low-income, black, and brown children have an equal right to share space with more privileged students in a system of public education. Anything less would be undemocratic." —Richard D. Kahlenberg, The New Republic "Authoritative, original, and insightful . . . Driver brilliantly analyzes the Court’s precedent-setting cases involving public education and draws on his own personal experience to write with empathy and insight about the children and families involved in these legal dramas."—National Book Review“[R]efreshing, inspiring, and... audacious... This book is an act of canon creation... Driver is not shy about this goal: he calls the public school ‘the single most significant site of constitutional interpretation with the nation’s history’ and makes a powerful case for that claim... The Schoolhouse Gate advances a full-throated account of the federal judiciary’s promise and a morally rich vision of constitutional law... The Schoolhouse Gate presents a powerful argument not just for students' rights but for a theory of constitutional rights that is attuned to the particular values and histories of American social institutions.” —Emma Kaufman, University of Chicago Law Review "As Driver shows throughout, all Americans have a vested interest in what happens in our public schools. It is for that reason that this book is a must read not just for civil rights lawyers and law students, but for all who are involved in educating our children. It is poignant... sometimes funny... and always intellectually rigorous. In short, it is a powerful book that is needed now, as we grapple with the role and legitimacy of the Supreme Court."—Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review"Driver is an unabashed liberal who thinks the American judiciary has failed . . . . But The Schoolhouse Gate is a valuable volume even for those who do not share Driver's politics. The book is a useful compiling of the school cases that have been the arena for much of our national discussion about religion, free speech, race, and privacy over the past hundred years. . . .  Always, somehow, our concerns about the clash of public order and individual rights become most pointed when the location is the American schoolhouse." —Joseph Bottum, The Washington Free Beacon   "An important and delightfully crafted book." —William Baude, The Volokh Conspiracy "Brilliant."   —LA Daily Journal "Important." —Gregg Easterbrook, The Weekly Standard"Engaging . . . Ambitious . . . Accessible . . . Excellent."—Shelf Awareness"It seems that no one has tried to put together a comprehensive look at what the Supreme Court has said about school integration and students’ rights of free expression and the interface between religion and education and other Bill of Rights protections in the school setting. That is what Mr. Driver has now accomplished. . . . [H]e very properly faults the justices for not moving more aggressively to end corporal punishment in schools and to limit the use of drug tests and of physical searches of students and their possessions." —The Washington Times"In The Schoolhouse Gate, the University of Chicago law professor casts a critical eye on the Supreme Court’s decisions—and its inaction—on issues governing public schools."—Slate“[E]pic... Driver’s book is informative, incisive, and educational. He writes that one of his goals in writing the book is to ‘reinvigorate education law as a field of intellectual inquiry.’ He has surpassed that goal and so much more with his landmark work.” —David L. Hudson, Jr., First Amendment News“The topics are thoughtfully organized and presented in a style that is precise enough for lawyers while remaining lively for educators and concerned parents, always keeping in view the human stories behind the landmark cases. One of Driver’s major concerns is that students will get early and vivid impressions of their rights as citizens from their treatment at school, and he often finds that treatment wanting. Thorough, accessible, and always relevant, this is a valuable service and reference for legal practitioners, educators, parents, and citizens concerned about constitutional rights in the context of public education.”  —Kirkus Reviews“Driver... examines the intersection of the Supreme Court and the public school system in this scrupulous study of two vital American institutions. Driver smartly analyzes how the Constitution applies to disciplinary actions, free speech, prayer in schools, and searches and seizures...  [I]lluminating, often contrarian analysis... Readers... will find much to learn from Driver’s independent thinking and unique insights.” —Publishers Weekly “Justin Driver’s extraordinary book, The Schoolhouse Gate, deeply probes the many ways in which our constitutional law, as interpreted by America’s judges, shapes the crucial world of public education—but fails the students for whom that education exists. No one who cares about our nation’s children and thus our country’s future can afford not to read this riveting work.” —Laurence Tribe, Harvard Law School, author of Uncertain Justice: The Roberts Court and the Constitution  “Justin Driver has written the definitive account of the intersection of two of the nation’s most important institutions—public schools and the Constitution.  Race, sex, drugs, religion, free speech, and indoctrination—it’s all here.  Driver brings the cases to life with compelling portraits of the characters behind the disputes, while simultaneously providing incisive analysis of the role of the Constitution in the classroom.”  —David Cole, Georgetown Law, ACLU National Legal Director, author of Engines of Liberty: How Citizen Movements Succeed   “It's pretty unusual to be moved to tears by a closely argued book on constitutional law.  But Driver's The Schoolhouse Gate is a most unusual book.  Written with elegance and passion, Driver's account of the role of the U. S. Supreme Court in defining the rights of students in our public schools is also an uncompromising work of meticulous scholarship, which will define our understanding of its topic for years to come. But there's something more: there's an indefinable quality of hope and love in this book, for our flawed yet aspiring processes of constitutional adjudication, as well as for the millions of children whose futures they shape.”—Martha C. Nussbaum, University of Chicago, author of The Fragility of Goodness  “The Schoolhouse Gate is a gripping, comprehensive, and accessible analysis of the role of the Supreme Court in the regulation of student life in public primary and secondary schooling.  It bristles with insight and eloquence and substantiates Driver’s burgeoning reputation as a leading figure in legal academia.” —Randall Kennedy, Harvard Law School, author of Race, Crime, and the Law “What a wonderful, engaging, provocative book!  Justin Driver contends that federal courts have an essential role to play in expanding the constitutional rights of public school students.  Even readers who disagree with some of the book’s conclusions—like myself—and believe that school decisions should instead be left largely to school boards, superintendents, principals, teachers, and parents will be forced to grapple with the powerful historical and legal arguments advanced in this impressive volume.” —Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, author of From Brown to Bakke"In this sweeping, meticulous, and authoritative account, Justin Driver shows how the Supreme Court has long shaped the lives of students in American public schools, for better but also patently for worse—affirming their freedom of speech yet thwarting it, for example, and ending their separation by race in theory yet making that almost impossible to fulfill in many places throughout the USA. He shows how momentous rulings about education helped make the Court one of the nation’s most powerful institutions, yet politically driven and frustratingly fickle. The Schoolhouse Gate is an important, engrossing, and excellent book, by an important, gifted, and brave thinker and writer." —Lincoln Caplan, Yale Law School, author of The Tenth Justice

A truly thought-provoking read. I was particularly taken by Driver’s discussion of corporal punishment in our public schools. Much to my surprise and horror, paddling is still commonly used as a punishment in schools, particularly in the Deep South. Driver’s thorough evisceration of the Supreme Court’s 1970s-era ruling that sanctioned school corporal punishment should be widely read and serve as a call-to-arms. Lawyers, educators and, frankly, any parent with school-aged children should study this portion of Driver's book with care and push where they can to help end this odious practice. I, for one, now feel inspired to do so.

As expected

Excellent review of the history of education related Supreme Court cases. Easy & engaging read.

I like that this book seems to take a 3-branch view of the Constitution (that the Supreme Court can be wrong, and often is, and that the Legislative and Executive branches are co-equal with the Judiciary) rather than the 1-branch view that the Court is the final and highest power in the nation. The 1-branch view is much more common in today’s world, especially in the mainstream media. Putting the topic of education aside, this 3-branch approach makes this book a rarity, one that is a must-read work for anyone interested in the modern Court. (Another book which effectively outlines the 3-branch approach, with more specifics, is Principles of Constitutional Law, 4th (Concise Hornbooks) (Concise Hornbook Series) by Nowak and Rotunda, Seventh Edition.)The Schoolhouse Gate is laced with the idea that the Court is sometimes wrong. For example, the author says that “The Supreme Court has also stumbled…” and calls one landmark case “a Constitutionally questionable decision…” The federal Courts in general are said to make “many wrongheaded decisions…” The book is filled with such language, a refreshing approach in our time. And one of the best things about this book is that is written for the regular reader, not limited to a few legal scholars. The focus of The Schoolhouse Gate—Court decisions and trends dealing with American education over time, including recent cases—is must-know information for all informed Americans. In historical scope, it reminds me of Constitutional histories by Forrest McDonald, but with more detail. Most people today don’t know the information outlined in The Schoolhouse Gate; making Driver’s book all the more important. I didn’t agree with all the book’s conclusions, but I did agree with many—and either way the book consistently caused me to think about things I had never really considered. This is a must-read for anyone interested in public policy, the Court, and/or education. It is not an easy read, but it isn’t too technical or full of jargon either—it is easy for most readers to understand. And the information is worth the time to read, take notes, and see how the cases and decisions Driver analyzes are relevant today. If you like books on the Court, this one is unique. If not, this is still one that every concerned American should seriously consider reading.

The Schoolhouse Gate pulls off something exceptionally rare. It brings impressive scholarly rigor to bear on one of the most powerful institutions in the country, the Supreme Court, as it regulates the rights of public school students. And it stirs your emotions, especially if you happen to be a parent. In the first case, the book is a subtle treatment of the cycle of great hope followed by crushing disappointment that often accompanies landmark legal rulings, like the 1969 Tinker decision establishing students’ free speech rights. Justin Driver wisely sees the decision as less revolutionary than its supporters deemed it to be, but also as more enduring than the pessimists who worry that the Court has aggressively curtailed free speech in recent years. In the second case, it’s impossible to read Driver’s account of the convoluted reasoning that, to this day, allows teachers and principles to batter young children without gasping at the moral obtuseness of the Supreme Court Justices responsible for it. It will make you want to march on Washington. Or, at the very least, demand that your senator ask Brett Kavanaugh a few more pointed questions before mindlessly voting to confirm him.

Excellent book. The author writes with complete command of his subject. He really knows the law as it involves Supreme Court cases and the education system. He definitely has a point of view. He writes with passion and dedication to the idea that Constitutionally protected rights must be extended to students. The book is unusual in that Driver does much more than merely lay out the highest court's decisions. He gives the factual background of the conflicts that led to the cases with a special emphasis on the harms done to the students and families in the center of each controversy. Highly recommended for motivated readers.

I wanted to wait until I had read this in its entirety to review it. But it is a long, dense book, and it is also one that should not be hurried through skimmed, or selectively read. I am almost 3/4 of the way through, and I plan to continue to take my time reading and digesting the book.I am someone who has read a fair amount about educational policy, and also comfortably reads and follows close analyses of court (and Court) decisions. So my take on the book may well be more representative of academics’ assessments than of general readers’ assessments. That said, though, I think the book is something of a tour de force, and that anyone who hopes to understand, and to be an informed participant in ongoing discussions and decisions about educational policy in the US really ought to read it.

Pablo Escobar's son writes a fair account of his father's life as he saw it. They lived a life of obscene extravagance and the father was popular among the poor people in Colombia due to his financing of soccer fields and housing for the poor. However, a heavy price was to be paid for this life of ill-gotten gains in having to be on guard against his many enemies. This amounted to a heavy strain on his wife, son, and other family members. Juan Pablo Escobar pleaded, to no avail, with his father to stop the war saying this was no way to live. The war with the Cali cartel eventually led to Pablo Escobar's demise and the remaining family members left to shift for themselves in finding another country that would take them in.This was truly a case of his son and other family members paying for the sins of the father. However, in Pablo Escobar's heyday I noticed the son had no problem wearing a watch that cost thousands of dollars and spent a fortune on the latest technological devices in New York that would prove beneficial to his father. As with other despots and gangsters the end result is either a prison or an early grave. The book contains sixteen pages of photographs.

Was totally impressed with the frankness of a son dealing with the trauma of a life pushed on him and his family by his fathers deeds. He is honest and forthright about how awful his paternal family turned out to be. A real deep look at the " life" through his child's eyes. Couldn't stop reading

After watching the Pablo Escobar series on Amazon, I was interested in knowing more about him and the family. This book sort of takes up where the series ends. Very interesting and informative. From the mouth of his son who knew him and is not at all unafraid to voice hie opinion and his experiences. Gave a richer meaning to the series.

I wish I thought the story was false, but I don't. I think it's worthwhile reading and gives a window into a scary world about which most people know nothing. JP Escobar's candidness is refreshing and I didn't know he had become a successful architect. The whole book is incredulous!

Great story told by son, and it was not making excuses for his father sins, but a telling of how his life was as a child with a notorious father

Very informative! I was interested in Escobar after watching the show Narcos, and this book helped clear up the inaccuracies from the show. I would still like to read more sources to hear the story from different perspectives, but this is definitely a must read for those interested in Escobar's life.

Good perspective of Escobar from his sons side of the story.

I wanted to read this book after finishing the third season of Narcos. I really enjoyed this book. It was fascinating to me and shed some light on what was fact and fiction in the series.

Amazing story, incredibly courageous. It is unbelievable what this family had and still has to go through. Great respect.
