Rae grew up in a troubled home and vowed she'd never go back after high school, especially after her best friend and boyfriend hurt her so badly. Rae takes on another identity in order to start over and makes bad choices repeatedly. When she finally sees what her husband's character really is, she takes her ten day old son back to her hometown. Brady's moved back home after a disastrous time and takes the job as a Police Detective. He's made some bad decisions after Rae left, but has never gotten over her. When Rae finally reaches home, she knows that she needs to leave soon for their safety. Has she covered her tracks, made it hard enough so that she can't be found? When Brady runs into Rae and sees how frightened she is, he vows to protect her and her newborn. Can he keep them safe? Will Rae ever trust him enough with the whole story? This is a continual "edge of your seat" book that I couldn't put down! The message is to open your heart by trusting God and true friends, even after making bad choices in life. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

If I had to pick just one genre to read, mystery/suspense thrillers would be my choice and this book would be on my "must-have" list for my bookshelf. The description of the book intrigued me, and as I started reading it I wondered how in the world Rae could a) survive, b) bring down an international crime ring, and c) be happily reunited with Brady, her high school sweetheart especially since she was married (I'll just say a great plot twist is involved). Patchen did an exceptional job laying this story out and making all of the details work together with a phenomenal end result! With each step that Julien and his cronies got to finding Rae, I found the hairs on my neck sticking up and my eyes growing wider with angst for her! Truly felt the fear and hopelessness in Rae's situation. But, as I said, Patchen's ability to create a believable story with a satisfying end deserves applause! Loved it and can't wait to read the other stories in the series! This review contains my own thoughts and opinions. I have not been compensated by the publisher or author in any way.

Convenient Lies is the first of Robin Patchen’s books I’ve read and I must say I truly enjoyed it. So much so that I’m already planning on reading the 3 other books in the series, perhaps in a Robin Patchen Binge. Covenient Lies was actually recommended in another author’s email and I’m so glad I chose to take a chance on an unknown to me author.A fast paced suspense thriller, Convenient Lies, takes place in the U.S. where Rae has returned in order to flee her husband, a man she thought she knew. Rae is an investigative reporter investigating the death of her best friend; during her investigative journey she runs into Julien. The attraction is immediate for both Rae and Julien, resulting in marriage just months after their initial meeting. Now just weeks after the birth of their son, Rae seeks to escape Julien and France, but why? Julien is a successful businesssman, who has never displayed any hint of anything other than a loving and devoted father. Yet, previous to the birth of Jean-Louis, their son, Julien became increasingly restrictive in Rae’s access to the outside world and even had hired bodyguards who reported her every move. Then there was his office; why did he keep it locked and why was she forbidden to enter? As an investigative reporter, Rae has a bag of tricks for obtaining information, picking locks is one of them. What she discovers in Julien’s desk drawers causes her to flee with their young son. Will she be able to hide from her husband? And what will he do when he realizes she knows he is not just a business man?

One woman’s desperate need for love and acceptance, coupled with her intense need to expose the truth, lands her in the middle of her worst nightmare. Running for her life, with her young son, Rae McAdams hopes for safety against all odds. Rae has just discovered what her husband’s real occupation is, and “no one leaves the family.”I downloaded this complimentary copy of Convenient Lies and accidentally opened it. I had no intention of reading it right now, but I was sucked into the story as I perused the first few sentences. This title, Convenient Lies, is the first book of the series, Hidden Truth by Robin Patchen. Though a series opener, it stands alone well. I am anxious to read the next novel in the series. I am sure it will be just as thrilling and mesmerizing.I received a complimentary copy of this eBook from the author. No positive review was required and all opinions are solely my own.

*Spoilers*Unfortunately, I can’t but rate this as is, and it all boils down to momentum. In broad strokes, the story is about, Reagan, a woman with many secrets, who decides to run away from Paris and from her hubby, Julien. In tow is their brand spanking newborn. Well, Reagan, you see, discovered that Julien was not whom he portrayed himself to be and not only that, she also had information that linked him and his family to terrorist activities. She heads back to the US and lands in her New Hampshire hometown, where she immediately reacquaints with, Brady, her high school BF and first love. At this point, Julien had discovered her disappearance, and knowing she can’t ever leave and most certainly not with his son, he embarks on a retrieval mission. What he doesn’t know is that most, if not all, of Reagan’s backstory had been no more than carefully orchestrated lies which makes finding her near on impossible. All of the above transpired before the halfway mark, however, and sadly, the story then sputtered into redundancy with the subsequent 40% revolving around a permanently tearful/crying Reagan, a fearful and inept Brady, and a hungry baby. Between feeding the baby and the crying by Reagan and the lukewarm pseudo love connection with Rea and Brady, the story never gains any meaningful arc.Eventually, and only at the very end, we glimpse a rather lacklustre resolution to the conflict, all wrapped up in a deus ex machina bow. Overall, quite underwhelming.

Nat Turner was a African American slave in Southampton County Virginia who was born in 1800. He led a slave rebellion in August 1831 and was executed that November. When he was in jail awaiting execution, a white lawyer named Thomas R. Gray visited him and wrote down Turner's own story which was published in 1831 as The Confessions of Nat Turner. This is not to be confused with the 1967 novel of the same title by the white Virginia author William Styron. However both Styron's novel and the graphic novel Nat Turner by Kyle Baker are derived from Gray's original Confessions. The illustrations for Baker's Nat Turner wordlessly illustrate the original 1831 Confessions which appears as text set in the graphic novel. The words of the original Confessions and Baker's graphic narrative enhance each other, creating a most powerful document for understanding Turner's life and motivation. Originally self published as a four part series, Nat Turner sold out two printings and won several prizes in 2006, including an Eisner Award for best reality-based work. Since 2008 it has been published as a single volume through a commercial press.Part One is called "Home" and tells the story prior to that covered in Gray's Confessions of Nat Turner of Nat's mother being captured in Africa by slavers, transported to the coast, and put onto a slave ship to America where she is sold as a slave. Part Two is called "Education" and tells the remarkable story of Nat, a gifted child with mysterious powers, who can read, who is deeply spiritual, and starts to receive visions and messages. At the same time, he is witness to the brutality of human slavery all around him and as it effects him and his parents, wife and children. After his wife and children are sold away from him, his visions take a dark turn where he sees white spirits and black spirits engaged in battle and blood flowing in streams. He is told to be prepared to receive a sign to begin his fight against the Serpent. The first sign of a solar eclipse marks the beginning of Part Three - Freedom in which Nat starts to tell a select group of close associates of his visions and they make plans for the rebellion. The Great Barbados hurricane of August 1831, which turned the Sun blue as far north as Virginia was to Nat Turner, the sign he had been waiting for to begin the slaughter. He and his four allies went into houses in the dark of night, killing all the whites, taking their weapons and horses, and recruiting followers from their slaves. Before they were eventually stopped, there were about 60 armed freed slaves following him and over 55 dead whites in their trail. Part Four - Triumph details Turner's last days.I had read Gray's book The Confessions of Nat Turner prior to reading Baker's graphic novel, and I find the combination of the hauntingly expressive images with the simple straightforward text an exceedingly effective manner to present Nat Turner's life and activities to a modern audience. The story is compelling to me because I live just two hours from the site of the rebellion, and slave conditions would have been the same here as they were for Nat Turner in Virginia. Baker has made the story one that I will never forget. At the end of the book is a Bibliography of further readings and a Teacher's Guide that would make this a powerful classroom instructional tool.

This is Kyle Baker’s amazing graphic novel biography of Nat Turner, the leader of the bloodiest slave rebellion in the United States. Turner was a slave living in Virginia. He’d taught himself to read, because it was illegal to teach slaves to read — slaveowners didn’t want educated slaves because they were more likely to rebel. Turner’s interest in reading was mainly so he could study the Bible, and his knowledge and high moral character had many fellow slaves referring to him as a prophet — he also had periodic visions which he believed came to him from God.One of his visions, combined with a few convenient solar eclipses, eventually convinced him that God wanted him to lead a battle against the forces of evil. And in the American South of the 1830s, evil was definitely well-represented among white slaveowners. When Turner and his accomplices began their rebellion, they initially stuck with quiet weapons — knives, axes, farming implements — rather than guns, and they didn’t just kill slaveowners — they killed women and children, too. They spared poor whites who they felt were as downtrodden as slaves, but they still ended up killing 60 people and amassing a force of 70 slaves and free blacks. Turner himself is believed to have killed only one person — he was extremely smart, but he was a lousy fighter. The rebellion was put down after two days, but Turner was able to hide out for several months. When he was finally captured, he was tried and sentenced to be hanged. He was also beheaded, and his body was buried in an unmarked grave.Kyle Baker’s book takes most of its text from Thomas Ruffin Gray’s book, “The Confessions of Nat Turner,” which included extensive interviews with Turner during his trial and before his execution. His art illustrates passages from the book, or interprets common episodes in the lives of slaves. There is very little dialogue or word balloons, and the art is entirely black, white, and sepia-toned brown.Turner’s story is an amazing one. He’s not a pure hero or villain — yes, he fought against terrific injustice, but he committed widespread murders. Baker depicts Turner warts and all — but I think it’s clear he sympathizes with him and his cause. It’s a stark and brutal story, frequently very violent. Turner and his rebels massacre families, ambush people in their homes, behead children — their actions shock us, and I think, rightfully so. But it’s still very hard not to sympathize — Turner’s actions aren’t sugarcoated, but it’s also made very clear that he’s living in a terribly unjust world, where slaves were subjected to horrible punishments for crimes like reading and playing drums. Slaveowners were said to be terrified of slave rebellions — and a lot of that terror may have been because they knew they deserved whatever the slaves would do to them.If you only know Baker’s work from his wonderful “Plastic Man” series from a few years ago, this story will probably knock you out of your socks. His cartoonish style on DC’s comedic series is nowhere to be seen here. The art is, at turns, rough-hewn and furious, and then lushly rendered and gloriously lit, sometimes crudely emotional, sometimes shockingly beautiful, and sometimes both at once. It’s a fantastic story about an unsung American freedom fighter, beautifully illustrated by one of our great graphic storytellers. You should pick it up.

I was impressed with the artwork in Nat Turner the graphic novel. I could see this novel being used in either middle school or the early high school years. The novel explained slavery quite well with the pictures. I did not think that a graphic novel could explain Nat Turner story appropriately but I was wrong. I highly recommend this graphic novel.

The graphics are as expected. But the print quality is not great, and the images are reduced too much.If I had bought it in a store (not online), I would have seen the problem.

Masterful strokes and shading produced a remarkable visual account of the circumstance of this historic figure. It has the feel of both a documentary and movie combined. Very little to read yet it wasn't a barrier in communication in the slightest. An instant classic and collectors item.

Came fast and was not damaged. Great packaging. Overall, was a good buy and a very good read.

I received it today in pristine condition and was very happy with the purchase! OUTRAGEOUS artwork and great story line! I would highly recommend buying from this seller again due to their quick response and conscientiousness to satisfy a customer! Very Satisfied! The Graphic Novel is the perfect medium for this famous historical figure.

I purchased this book to keep in my library

I really did love this book! Lindsay Faye is the very best writer of Holmes pastiches. She captures the setting, atmosphere, Watson's narrative voice, Holmes' narrative voice and the overall style of Conan Doyle's original tales with uncanny mastery. I don't want to spoil it for anyone else, so I'll just add that "Memoranda Upon the Gaskell Blackmailing" was one of my favorites because it fills in the gaps of Holmes' absence in The Hound of the Baskervilles, has Holmes fussing about Watson's forgetting to pack his muffler and having it posted first thing in the morning, and, like "The Adventure of the Thames Tunnel," characterizes Holmes as emphatically not misogynistic. He's as kind, protective, sympathetic and gallant to women as he is the original stories. "The Adventure of the Beggar's Feast" and "Notes Upon the Diadem Club Affair" both illustrate Holmes' compassionate care for children-his band of Irregulars; it's an insightful inference I believe Conan Doyle would be pleased with. I don't agree with those authors who have condemned the detective for callous exploitation of these poor children. I find such negligence to be completely out of character. "Notes Upon the Diadem Club Affair" gives Watson the opportunity to neatly put Holmes in his place and also clears the detective of that appearance of avarice Conan Doyle included in "The Adventure of the Priory School." It also introduces a version of Sir Percy Blakeney, another of my all time favorite characters of fiction, whom I was delighted to see quite at home in this environment in a clever twist at the end. Like Dust and Shadows, this is a real treat for Holmes fans. I'm hoping for more soon!

Finally! An author whose 'voice' is true to AC Doyle. It's not 100% perfect but it's very close. I've always found Sherlock Holmes clones to be uninteresting and unsatisfying because the writing just does not capture Watson's voice. This is the first author I've ever found that I thought was every bit as entertaining as the original. I haven't checked to see if Faye has written any other Sherlock Holmes books but I would buy them! The book is a collection of short stories; the "lost mysteries." Many of them deal with Holmes early cases. I thought Faye's Holmes was as entertaining as Doyle's which is about the highest praise I can think of. Big kudos to the author!

I read about this book in a review in our local newspaper, and being a fan of Sherlock Holmes, I immediately went to Amazon and bought it. The Whole Art of Detection could have been written by Arthur Conan Doyle--it was that authentic. A couple of the adventures were quite brief, but even those were good. None of the stories were as good as The Hound of the Baskervilles, butthat would be hard for anyone to replicate. If you have read all the original Holmes and still want more, this book is worth buying.

This fills in a lot of holes in the Canon. Lyndsay Faye is one of the best of Holmes's more recent pastische writers, though she is an apologist for Watson. She gives him far more credit, honestly earned, perhaps, than Doyle ever did! The depiction of the Era is faithful to the canon, and presumably is accurate. I have enjoyed Fayes' writings and edits, but have difficulty accepting the "new" Watson!

This author imbues both Holmes and Watson with a depth of human compassion and complexity I don't think I've seen in any other collection, and in a way that's authentic, charming and completely believable. While the stories themselves were superbly written - she manages to capture all the nuance in language and descriptions of the originals - this humanization of subjects often portrayed more as caricatures was what truly impressed me the most. I was genuinely sorry to reach the last page.

Well written and entertaining. The stories in which Holmes is narrating are actually better than The Lion's Mane from the original Conan Doyle stories. Unlike Doyle (who doesn't even attempt to give Holmes some introspection and visualization of his personality) the author gives Holmes an inner voice that allows the reader to better understand his unique mental process as well as his conflicts in trying to understand Watson and the rest of the world. This is done casually and sometimes comically but in my opinion works perfectly.Unfortunately the other stories are not as entertaining. There is not a lot of "Deduction" involved and some of the stories are just reflections on past cases where Holmes talents are not fully utilized. It is however worth the wait for future cases from this author.

I love Lyndsay Faye! Her interest in Sherlock Holmes is a gift to Sherlockians everywhere. This story collection was a joy to read. It is atmospherically and verbally faithful to the originals, but the plots are even more interesting and sophisticated (without being overblown) and the dialogue is just a bit edgier - borrowing just a little attitude from the modern Sherlock series. If you discovered (or are about to discover) Ms. Faye's writing through your interest in Sherlock Holmes, may I suggest that you check our her Timothy Wilde trilogy, which is absolutely captivating.

I cannot praise this book highly enough. If I could give more stars I would. These stories are written with all the attention to detail of the Canon and with the warmth, charm and familiarity that we expect from the modern Holmes and Watson. The mysteries themselves were excellent puzzles. More please! More more more!

Review

"Leigh Fermor exults in the otherness of the far-flung place… . He demands nothing from those countries save an opportunity to slip quietly under their skin." —Anthony Lane, The New Yorker "Being a natural romantic, Leigh Fermor was able to probe the hidden recesses of this mixed civilization and to present us with a picture of the Indies more penetrating and original than any that has been presented before." —Harold Nicholson, The Observer "Before mass-market guides like Frommer’s and Lonely Planet, travelogues were tourists’ main resources outside Europe. For the 1950s Caribbean, Patrick Leigh Fermor’s The Traveller’s Tree was the bible." —The New York Times "Still the best piece of travel writing on the Caribbean." —The GuardianPraise for Patrick Leigh Fermor: "One of the greatest travel writers of all time”–The Sunday Times “A unique mixture of hero, historian, traveler and writer; the last and the greatest of a generation whose like we won't see again.”–Geographical “The finest traveling companion we could ever have . . . His head is stocked with enough cultural lore and poetic fancy to make every league an adventure.” –Evening Standard If all Europe were laid waste tomorrow, one might do worse than attempt to recreate it, or at least to preserve some sense of historical splendor and variety, by immersing oneself in the travel books of Patrick Leigh Fermor.”—Ben Downing, The Paris Review

About the Author

Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915-2011) was an intrepid traveler, a heroic soldier, and a writer with a unique prose style. After his stormy schooldays, followed by the walk across Europe to Constantinople that begins in A Time of Gifts (1977) and continues through Between the Woods and the Water (1986), he lived and traveled in the Balkans and the Greek Archipelago. His books Mani (1958) and Roumeli (1966) attest to his deep interest in languages and remote places. In the Second World War he joined the Irish Guards, became a liaison officer in Albania, and fought in Greece and Crete. He was awarded the DSO and OBE. He lived partly in Greece—in the house he designed with his wife, Joan, in an olive grove in the Mani—and partly in Worcestershire. He was knighted in 2004 for his services to literature and to British–Greek relations. Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a doctoral student in geography at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written for The Guardian, The Believer, The Nation, Foreign Policy, and The New York Review of Books, among other publications.

A very interesting and informative travel book about the islands of the Caribbean circa 1950, several of which were devastated by the 2017 hurricane. My advice is buy the book but don't plan to visit the Caribbean anytime soon. You'll have a much happier experience as an armchair traveler right now.

Paddy Fermor is an absolutely sui-generis person and writer. This post-war account of his travels through the Caribbean isles comes on the heels of his service with the SOE behind enemy lines in Greece and Crete where he, amongst other things, was the only agent - of whom I am aware - to capture a Nazi General single-handedly, in occupied Greece. And yet, he is anything but smug or bluff, but rather singularly self-effacing in all his writing, falling in love, or yearning to do so, with everyone and, more significantly here, every place where he sojourns and giving the people and the place centre-stage. Also, he refrains from even a hint of talking down to the reader and gives him/her conversations in the French Créole patois as he hears them, and weaves his erudition into the lush writing in a manner which involves the reader with a particular island's lore and history in a mesmerising, rather than off-putting manner. The detailed history which Fermor gives of each island is always fascinating and well-told, and helps to put the sights, sounds, smells he encounters into a deeper context, lending the reader his own deep sense of atavism such as one usually only encounters in works of great literature, such as the best of Conrad and Powys. It is quite beyond the scope of a review such as this one to attempt to impart Fermor's experience on each of the islands, or to compare or to contrast them. There is this book for that! It is even beyond the scope of this reviewer to delve the into Fermor's impressionistic, Romantic mindset, for Fermor does it much better himself describing Martinique:"We rose to leave when the rain abated, and found that the moon had broken through the clouds. The garden was a faint constellation of flowers that were only distinguishable by their pallor from the darkness. Under the dripping mango trees, tier on tier of lawn descended into the darkness. The air was warm and scented, and the forest, faintly rimmed with silver, completely surrounded this high, sloping world. The singing of some Negro women floated up from the village with the echo of the falling waves and the faint gasp of the shingle.Moments like this fill one with gratitude; not necessarily so much because of their incidental beauty, but because of the understanding they bring; they act as a Rosetta stone to a whole system of hieroglyphs. That house, those lights and voices and flowers and smells and sounds, I felt, gave me a better chance of grasping the atmosphere, the scope and mood of Créole life in the Antilles than a library full of memoirs and chronicles."Not to the exclusion of memoirs and chronicles, to be sure, but the reader must surely succumb to the poetic nuances of Fermor's prose to grasp this enchanted Rosetta stone and develop a sixth sense as to places and people in the reading of this unique labour of love.

In this delightful tome, Patrick Leigh Fermor takes us to a number of Caribbean islands in the post-war, pre-tourism era; and in so doing he burnishes his reputation as perhaps the best travel writer of modern times. To his credit, Fermor does not attempt to hit all the islands in the Caribbean -- only a handful -- but in that handful he dishes out detail and cultural gems of a Caribbean that no longer exists. There are few cruise ships and opulent hotels in Fermor's Caribbean. Rather, there are societies that have been shaped by geography, the invasion of European settlers in the Age of Exploration and, perhaps most of all, the bitter disaster of centuries of slavery. Fermor delves into these influences with great gusto and incredible detail. Of particular note are his several chapters on Haiti, which focus mainly on Voodooism, which so defines the turbulent history of the country. His description of the many facets of that mysterious belief system are definitive. In his first books, "A Time of Gifts" and "Between the Woods and the Water", Fermor, walking from The Netherlands to Istanbul, described in chilling detail a Europe about to be smashed by World War II. In "The Traveller's Tree" he gives us a region about to be forever altered by tourism. It's a book rich in detail and wonder -- testament to this legendary travel writer's skill.

This is a superb travel essay book. It deals with the undeveloped Caribbean just after WW II. Leigh Fermor's prose i strikingly evocative..

Sadly Mr. Fermor has passed on at age 92 but the quality of his observation then skill in writing is amazing. I have read all of his work published to date. This book is the most thorough I have ever seen on Caribbean culture and even though written in 1947 it provides the real background to what is happening there today. A delight to read - never boring and his other works are equally edifying. Be sure to make notes of the words you don't know the meaning of - you will be amazed at his word choices once you look them up! Great teacher.

WHAT A GEM OF A RETRO TRAVEL BOOK. WILDLY POLITICALLY INCORRECT IN PLACES = WRITTEN IN ANOTHER ERA. ARMCHAIR TRAVEL THE WEST INDIES OF THE CARIBBEAN THE WAY THEY WERE BEFORE TOURISM.

I would describe this as a weighty tome, but maybe darned good read fits better, describes West Indies 25 years before I lived there.

The companion book to "Live and Let Die". M of Q branch gave it to Bond so that he could study up on Voodoo while in the islands.
