It is literally a roadmap that describes how to install, configure, and run 28 different applications and services.The list: web server, mail server, database server, print server, time server, DHCP server, Mediawiki server, blog site, OpenVPN server, FTP server, Samba server, content-management-system, anti-spam server, and webmail server. Plus, the book describes how to install PHP, phpLDAPadmin, phpMyadmin, a DHCP client, and more.Oh, and in those jam-packed 256 pages, Mr. Hong managed to include a section on how to use, maintain, and upgrade ports!Each chapter is helpfully tagged with a level rating which identifies how much "effort" is required to install the app/service. Level 1 apps are the easiest. Level 5 apps are the hardest -- though, thanks to Mr. Hong concise and informative writing, even level 5 apps are easy to install.Each chapter is broken down into: Summary, Resources (web links), Requirements (what is needed before starting the chapter), Optional Requirements, Preparation, Install steps, Configure the app/service, Utilities to manage the app/service, Config files involved, Log files involved, and a Notes section.I've been in the IT business for over 15yrs and this book, by far, is one of the best I've read for an operating system. I have every book on FreeBSD on the market. But somehow I was never able to get a fully functional FreeBSD server running rock solid.This book got me there! It tells me precisely what parts (ports or packages) I need to create a particular type of server (mail, internet, etc.), where to find them, how to install and configure, all in short, concise instructions. And it all worked! It's really a great little book. I hope the author comes by and checks out reviews of his book so I can tell him here how much I appreciate his taking the time to publish his "notes."

Today's servers utilize so many different technologies (HTTP, SQL, SSH, SSL, FTP, DNS, Mail) that just gathering the information to set up server with average features is a big task - especially if it is not your real job. It is pretty simple to find information on setting up a particular package, but not easy to get information to make it all work together.This book takes a very clear flowchart approach and tells you what to install and in what order. If you want a web server, a mail server, a file server, or some variant, this book will help you to build it.I know that seasoned system administrators frown on the scripted "type this and then this" approach to setting up a server but you have to start somewhere. This book will help you to set up a full fledged working and relatively secure server. From there if you want to learn more about a particular technology, great go right ahead and delve in deeper (with another more specific book.) You will after following the instructions in this book have a great platform to configure and expand.I have read several other books on different variants of BSD and this one really pulled it all together.

Having this book is like having a good friend who is a FreeBSD Internet Server guru by your side. This book shows you how to do what you want to do and gives you just enough background info so that you feel confident in what you have done. To search out the specific info in this book on your own would take weeks of frustration and sifting through hundreds if not thousands of pages of confusing manuals and articles.I only wish this author would make another book and include even more how-to's such as Nagios, Cacti, Zenoss, SNMP, Single Sign On, and other common tools that FreeBSD Internet Server Administrators use when setting up an environment.

A good quick reference, and ties in well with the topics presented in Absolute FreeBSD (2nd ed) by M Lucas. But Lucas has a much better writing style, and gets across his technical info in a better way, by explaining why things work the way they do.Building a Server with FreeBSD 7 is kind of the quick and dirty, do this, do this, done. And although it has helped me set up FreeBSD on my first try as a competent server, I'm still trying to find out why the book tells you to do certain things and how components work together. With the info from Lucas in his books, you know how things work together and why you're instructed to do certain things.

Anyone reading this book will come away with a much better understanding of where cheap, available, and save fossil fuel should stand in the hierarchy of our energy needs--and completely understand why someone like Rex Tillerson was considered capable of becoming Secretary of State assuming he was willing to take this job on for the right reasons.

This is must buy. I purchased the CD and Audible versions. The book traces the history of the current forms of energy with the focus on the positive and negative impacts on economics and environment, the politics, and the recent developments of the technologies. Interweave is the discussion on the geopolitics of energy and the environmental movement. Obviously, ever country is different in its energy use and policy actions. I found the sections on the automobile and energy transportation to be the best parts.In general, the author is apolitical. He advocates two principles. First, he does advocate that the use of the market forces to control the development of energy production and transportation as well as the control of the environmental impact. Although there is a need for government to use taxpayer money to fill the gaps were the market does reach (for example the US government seeded self-sustaining cooperatives to provide rural power generation / transportation which greatly improved agricultural and other remote industries as family homes), in general, command economies are inefficient since they are subject to market forces. Even apartment dwellers do not have a place to re-charge and service stations cannot support a large electric fleet quickly with rapid recharge or battery swaps. Second, the electric production may have to double to replace the gas internal combustion engine. The analysis is that hybrid and all-electric will replace gas cars but not completely and not everywhere, especially remote areas with limited energy grids. In these places it is easier to carry your gas versus plugging in.

Everything now seems to fall into place as his new book takes off from the ending of his previous. The Quest is an absolute treasure trove of knowledge, information, and analysis regarding not only energy, but also the history, technology, politics, science (eg climate change), and globalization/economics of the last few decades, as well as the events of today, and projections for tomorrow. Additionally, the book is alarmingly relevant and up to date, yet still optimistic.I'll admit, the book is not an easy read (at least for me). As a student, I feel that this book should be the staple for anyone studying business, economics, political science, engineering, finance, history, science, etc.The Quest, along with The Prize, is a must read for anyone looking to grasp where we as society have been, where we are, and where we are going.
