Over the years, I have wondered why my bills kept going up in spite of promises from various industries and companies describing how they were going to pass the savings on to me, and my bills would be going down. By all accounts, my phone bill should have gone down once I started buying my own phones and making fewer calls. My electric bill from Consolidated Edison should have shown a steady decline, as they promised it would when they were freed from regulation. My cable bill should have remained pretty steady at $30.00 a month like it was 15 years ago instead of appreciate to $130.00 a month, especially with a bundle.Author David Cay Johnston was wondering the same thing, only he took it a number of steps further and began investigating how common such occurrences were across the land, and he found out plenty. Electric companies serving Louisiana and neighboring states were charging their customers for electricity from streetlamps that were not working, even from lamps that had never been installed, and they had been doing so for decades. The bottom line is that many of these big companies have "market power," the ability to raise prices in spite of competition and weak economies. Instead of the competition keeping prices low companies collude to keep the prices high, even raising them. They may not have to pay the corporate taxes to the government but can charge you for them as if they had. They are allowed to charge you $35.00 for overdrafts even though it costs them less than a penny to make the adjustment. They can create their own oligopolies over municipalities, counties, states, even regions. Companies that offer enormous sums to buy the local power or water company will make it up in increased charges even if they cannot justify them. They are able to do this because they lobby and contribute to politicians who appoint industry friendly candidates to regulatory agencies, allow add-on costs, such as surcharges equipment or services that don't exist, and company threats to move out of town or the state unless they are forgiven state taxes for years or even decades. One of the more insidious breaches of consumer rights is arbitration, once only used in contracts between companies. They are in the contracts you make when buying a car, getting a home equity loan, or the franchise you buy. It keeps you from suing. To make things worse, you must submit to arbitration on the home turf of the company or bank even if it means it's across the country before an arbitrator they have probably used many times before, and to whom you must pay a heafty percentage if he or she rules in your favor. While these companies market themselves as restrained by regulation, they in fact make regulation work in their behalf. With government sanction and blessing, they have made the consumer pay more for every conceivable service, real or imagined. They are not interested in an unfettered free market because their prices would have to come down, and they are only interested in maintaining their "pricing," a euphemism for profit.David Cay Johnston elevates a book of mundane facts to the status of a thriller. It's a thriller because it has a plot, in fact many of them, of companies that can bring their financial might to bear to rob you blind. He weaves these stories like a suspense novel only it is sickeningly real.Fortunately, "The Fine Print" isn't in fine print. It's one reason why you need to read this.

I bought this book after it's author was a guest on Bill Maher's Real Time. Written in layman terms, it explains a lot about why things are the way they are, and how they came to be that way. We are introduced to the railroads in a way that offers a very different perspective than I suspect most people have. From there we look at a number of the common elements of our society: cable television, garbage services and other typical services. One might want to brand the author as a liberal, but he merely recites facts and information sources that are pretty difficult to argue with, and in the end he really doesn't take sides. I think this is a book everyone should read.

Mr. Johnston is a financial investigative reporter. This is his third book. The first two were "Perfectly Legal" and "Free lunch". He has appeared in a documentary and is often interviewed on news channels relative to financial matters. Now about this new book, if anything it was more depressing than the first two. In chapter after chapter he spells out the mismanagement of our tax dollars not only at the Federal level but also State. It was very hard to read. I could only take a chapter at a time. I would put it down and start again another day. The money being given to politicians is mind boggling and the largess given in return inflates the profits, particularly of the largest corporations by providing ways to hide profits so little or no taxes are paid. One issue happened in 2004. The corporations that had moved American jobs to China and elsewhere were required to pay 35% tax on profits but only when returned to America. The Congress in its wisdom granted them a special tax of 5%. The bill was called "the Jobs Creation Act of 2004". It was passed with 205 out of 221 Republicans and 75 of 199 Democrats. The corporations brought home $312 Billion. While there was a promise of American jobs, nowhere in the bill did it specify nor was there any provision to monitor. In actual fact thousands were laid off. As an example Pfizer closed whole factories. The workforce at the end of 2004 was 115,000. By 2009 it was down to 75,000. Hewlett- Packard immediately fired 14,000 employees. Other industries did the same. Astonishing that such a disgrace could occur under the guise of helping American workers. Believe it or not in 2012 these same corporations have accumulated $1 Trillion in untaxed profits. I am well aware that consideration is being made to repeat this once again which will deny proper tax payments and destroy several hundred thousand more jobs. Once again it will be the Republican Party most in favor. Regardless of who becomes President, this will be approved. Keep in mind that all the while American manufacturers producing in America pay 35%. Can you not see how wrong this is? There are specific chapters about abuses in pipe lines, railroads, waste removal, telecommunications, film production, etc. Each time he clearly states the facts which beg for correction. His final chapter is entitled "Solutions". The most important concerns the 2010 Supreme Court decision to grant corporations unlimited expenditures to influence elections. He particularly chastises Chief Justice Roberts for giving them vast new rights. He mentions previous bad decisions by the Court such as the Dred Scott decision that stated that slaves were not persons protected by the Constitution. He pleads that the Congress take action to overturn or that new justices might reverse. Since the decision was 5 to 4 that could happen but in the meantime untold damage will have occurred to our election system. I will end here by imploring others to read this and his other two books and do what you can to restore a Congress that truly cares about American workers.Jack B. WaltersOctober 10, 2012

David Cay Johnson does it again. He won a Pulitzer when writing about taxes for the New York Times. Now he has put much of what he learned in a very readable book about why the middle class is struggling and the rich are getting richer. He covers a wide range of "complicated" government policies designed to hide the subsidies that the very rich get which are taken out of the pockets of the middle class. He writes with such fluidity and shows how these governmental policies affect each of us that you can't read it without getting mad. While I have some doubts about some of the solutions he offers, he is dead right that we are heading back to the 1890s when the plutocrats ran the country to the detriment of the free enterprise system that they publicly espouse but privately set up monopolies or oligopolies that guarantee they don't have to face price competition. A must read.

Painfully out of date. Avoid at all costs

I've been to Mexico City twice on vacation and I used this book both times, extensively, to find good places to eat and sightsee. On top of just being a great guide it is packed full of interesting information about the history and culture of Mexico and Mexico City. While on vacation I often run into people with much larger travel guides who, when you talk to, don't really know that much about the area. That is because they don't take the time to read those huge guides. This guide is just about the right size to get good information out of and carry along with you in your backpack or maybe your girlfriend or wife's purse.Happy Travels!

Great guide to a great (and underrated) city. Has great tips for dining and museums, as well as the many great neighborhoods of this giant megalopolis!

We bought it because it is one of the few books which has a few walks. But you cannot read it: The fonts are too small. Especially when walking around.

Even today,George Devol's "biography" is a fun read. Devol writes about the glory days of riverboat (and train) gamblers, around the time of the Civil War. The book jumps around in time and place, and you can just as easily start in the middle, since each chapter is a anecdote often set off by random thoughts or remembered friends. Devol presents himself as a professional gambler, or perhaps as a gambling entrepreneur. One of the major themes is that cheating in one form or another was standard in the life of professional gamblers. Devol doesn't spare himself in his stories and admits quite openly to cheating people of large sums of money. He is quick to also point out his virtues, including returning money to victims who couldn't spare their losses. Devol's morality is summarized simply as "If you would have taken my money, you can't complain if I took yours", and even in our modern legalistic society it still has some power. Fair warning: This is an uncensored work by someone who spent many years in the South around the time of the civil war. The N world is used, and Devol's views of race relations are brutally simple. Devol doesn't defend slavery for the most part, but he doesn't condemn it either.

By total chance this title caught my eye in the UNLV library when I was walking by. I ended up buying it on Amazon when I got back home. Very glad I did (although I hear the Free Kindle version is just as good). This is not so much a book narrative his life as it is a collection of anecdotes and stories from that life, broken up in one to two page sections. What a life. Duval ran away from home as a young boy and worked on a ship. There he learned how to deal cards and also, how to cheat. The thing they say about cons, at least 19th and early 20th century cons, (read The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man if interested) is they never worked on an honest mark. Almost all of them depended on presenting low but illegal hanging fruit in front of a greedy man and then parting him from his money while he grabbed at it. One of Duval's most successful was to conspicuously mark a card in his deck and deal until he knew the victim had spotted the pattern. He'd wait until the man placed a huge bet, certain to win with his inside knowledge, and then deal him a losing hand. Duval seems to have been the embodiment of Roosevelt's expression about walking softly but carrying a big stick. He'd always give some of the winnings back if it was all the loser had in the world, or if he'd bet his wife's jewelry and lost, Duval would send it back to her stateroom later that night. But if they wouldn't take their turn of the cards with some dignity he had no problem fighting or draw his pistol (which he called Betsy Jane but never used). In fact, his favorite weapon was his head, and the book must detail 20 instances where he wins a fight with a solid headbutt. There is a lot of great history in here since he experienced the South both pre, during and post-Civil war (was actually imprisoned by the occupying Union forces for nearly a year). My only criticism is that after about 150 pages the stories all seem to blur together. You can only hear about an overconfident guy falling for a trick and then fighting about the money he lost so many times. But if you read it sporadically or non-linearly it's an excellent book to have.

Devol was NOT a gambler. He was a CHEAT, and he isn't shy about it. Some of these shams still exist today. Sure enough they have moved off public transportation. Can you even imagine a card shark on an airplane? No. They've moved to the Internet. The best value of this book to me was the historic perspective and actual glimpses into life centered around the golden age of Mssissippi River steamboating. The socialology of the time comes through subtly but that is the most interesting part of the whole work.

If you are interested in a gambler's life on a Mississippi riverboat, this could be for you. It is written by a shrewd gambler who spent most of his life going up and down the river, with tale after tale of how he eyed up characters for his gaming table and the success and failures he had. It is repetitive somewhat, being that each story results in someone being cheated out of his money. It would be a good read along with Life on the Mississippi, by Mark Twain. I enjoyed it because my ancestors owned plantations near Vicksburg during the 19th century and I want to learn more about this era.

This book is about the life of a gambler on the Mississippi and it's really a good read. It's not very big, and broken up into a lot of small sections so you can sit down and get a good story with only a few minutes to spare. And, each of the sections / stories is made up of an anecdote in Devol's life, which can be quite interesting. After reading this book you'll really get a feel for how life was on the Mississippi. Only bone I'd pick is as it's written to be a lot of small stories, he can tend to repeat himself, and sometimes you kind of wish the writing was tighter.Still, you can't beat the experience for the price!

Great read - very interesting and a fantastic snapshot of that time period. I have used my Kindle dictionary to highlight several words (typically never have to do this) that were "1800's period" words and the Kindle dictionary covered them all. I thought it was fascinating how much money was bet - won - lost during a time where I thought no one had any money. Being from Louisiana, I really enjoyed reading about New Orleans, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River during that time. Like me, I wouldn't doubt that you are inspired to look-up some of the games and set-ups that are mentioned in the book. I have even watched a couple YouTube videos on how to play Faro and Euchre.

I read a lot of older books because they are free. Most are worth exactly what I paid for them. Usually the language is stilted and difficult to read. This one however wasn't bad. The authors adventures as a riverboat gambler were pretty exciting at times and he was a decent writer. Some of the stories seem unbelievable but he writes them well enough that it doesn't matter. A nice glimpse into times past. For the price you can't go wrong.

This books takes the concept of mercenaries in a fantasy setting and turns it on it's head. In the world of the book mercenaries are treated like a combination of rock stars and or superheroes. Instead of looked upon with scorn as the are in other fantasy novels. In fact they are called Bands and are structured kind of like modern rock bands. With the leader of each individual group called the frontman and have five to seven members with at least one magic user/wizard. And the groups names often take their inspiration from classic rock tunes. When they are hired for a job called it's a "gig" by an agent called a "booker." Active groups are said to be Touring. Along the way, author manages to skewer fantasy tropes like trolls, orcs dragons, other magical creatures too numerous to mention, and the excesses of classic rock group stereotypes, like sex, drugs, alcohol, and the occasional random property damage. The book follows the exploits of Saga a former top merc band with a rep among the public and their peers like the Stones or The Beetles. They get back together for one last gig of a personal nature to rescue the estranged daughter of the groups frontman from a city under siege from a demonic horde incited by an old enemy. This is a darkly funny tale with plenty of twists, turns, narrow escapes, and outrageous action adventure. You find yourself laughing out loud and at times choked up by the raw emotion of these life long friends coming back together for one last time to save the day.

If looking for positive and negative feedback on this book don't read any further, there is nothing; not a word, situation, resolution, description, I would change, nothing. On its face a simple story - a man asking his old friends to help save his daughter from what they all know, is an impossible situation. And it remains a simple story.A funny, sad; sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes uplifting story where hard men demonstrate simple acts of humanity that convey more compassion than paragraphs of flowery language. I didn't need a thesaurus next to my bedside to read this book, and when you might, the author made fun of himself.Don't let this review confuse you, this is a band of fat, old, drunk, womanizing mercenaries- who just happened to live long enough to make a choice of who and what they want to be when the grow up, when glory isn't enough..I would recommend this book to anyone I know.Edit: Ok I lied The one thing I would change would be adding a chapter for the antagonists. The bones of his motivation are there but some flesh, his conflict, the compromises he needed to make - what he lost to assemble his mosh pit.

So, Kings of the Wyld.. Where to start?I suppose I will start by saying that this is the first book I felt compelled to write a review for. Not that I haven't read many good books; I have. Not that this book is in dire need of more champions; It isn't. But for a plethora of reasons that you will soon find out, should you pick up a copy and read it.I had heard good things about this book all over the internet but mostly from the Fantasy-Faction Facebook group. While all the praise certainly buoyed my confidence in my purchase, while browsing in the bookstore it was the amazing Richard Anderson cover that snapped the money out of my wallet and slapped it onto the counter at check-out.It was said to be a fun, fun book. A book with great action scenes and better characters. One that took inspiration (and attitude) from the author's newfound love of classic rock. Bands like RUSH, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Neil Young were an inspiration. It was said to have moments of great sadness and beauty. Maybe most of all, it was said to be a book that had an awful lot of heart.I am here to reassure you that it is all of those things, yet so much more.In a genre (mostly) stuck in the age of grimdark, KotW is a sweeping, veritable hurricane of crisp, wondrous fresh air.I love this book. I can tell you without doubt, that I will be enjoying it for years to come.I would recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in fantasy. I would urge it upon the fantasy fanatic. I will be buying a second copy for my shelf and lending the one I read to any friends whose mouths I can manage to pry open and force it down. The thing is though, I doubt I will need to. I have a good feeling that they will willingly gobble it down in a few large bites and enjoy it (almost) as much as I did.Buy this book.-SPOILERS BELOW-......................RIP Dane and Gregor. I will forever remember your childlike wonder and your beautiful heart.

The story: in a medieval setting of abundant monsters and magic, a retired band of adventurers, Saga, rallies to the desperate plea of one of its members whose swashbuckling daughter is trapped in a city besieges by unspeakable doom. Journeying through wild cities and dangerously populated landscapes, meeting a bewildering array of friends and foes both old and new, they race against time and fate to rescue a forlorn city, save a cherrished daughter, and, while they are at it and with no particular plan, spare the world of man from oblivion.Appealing features: written with skill and gusto, this tapestry of colourful characters weaves effortlessly through comedy, action and drama in equal measure. It's a fast-paced, gripping tale that can rival with any of the leading Fantasy books, an artful mix reminiscent of both Abercrombie and Pratchett.Criticisms: for once, none come to mind!
