This is easily one of the best books ive ever read. Aaronson goes through problems and examples rather quickly so be prepared to stop and think and work along with pen and paper.While he introduces complexity theory he does assume the reader is already familiar. He even explicitly states so several times. Be that as it may a hard working reader can certainly follow along.The text is chock full of amazing and wonderful inisghts not only for the computationally inclined but also for the physicist. Aaronson has a unique view of physics and i found his perspective wildly illuminating.I wish id have found and read this book in 2012 when it was published.SImply amazing. IT is a book i will surely come back to and read again and again.Well done

A more accurate title would be "Hanging out in the Complexity Zoo: Lecture Notes". While there is discussion on quantum mechanics especially in the view of it being 2-norm vectors being used in a probability like system, the main focus is on complexity. For example, there's a decent amount of focus on the Merlin-Arthur class of decision problems that can be solved where Merlin, an untrusted entity with unbounded computational resources, can send a polynomial-sized proof of a solution of the problem to Arthur, a Probabilistic polynomial-time (i.e. computational limited with randomness) verifier. Arthur then will verify the proof as correct at least 2/3s of the time. Near the end there is some discussion of topics like time travel, time, and free will. Typically by coming up with new types of problems such P(CTC) which is all problems solvable by a polynomial machine with closed timelike curves i.e. time travel.The big problem with the book is that it's almost flat out not written for a causal reader. As admitted by the author, it's a collection of lecture notes from a class in 2006 that doesn't know what its audience is. It doesn't have enough handholding to be for general audiences, nor enough focus to be a textbook. There's a lot to learn and more importantly think about, but it's hard reading if you're not prepared.The key things you need for the book is a solid understanding of matrices while a familiarity to computational nomenclature is greatly helpful. I will admit I let my matrices skills lapses which made this a hard book to read (I often had to stop and look up stuff on wikipedia) and I feel like I missed at least a decent chuck of the insights in the book. The author's wiki, the Complexity Zoo helped. The authorial tone is flippant and he's tries to exceptionally witty some of the time especially when he brings up Stephen Wolfram.Unlike the author, I think the book could be general audience reachable with a chapter on matrices and another on basic terminology. It'll still be a hard read and never mass-markable, but it'll be more accessible to those with the inclination to read it.Ultimately, I suggest the book if you found the above discussion of the Merlin-Arthur problems interesting and your matrices are up to snuff. If they're not, you'll want to skip it or get back to it once you do. I may reread it at some point, but ultimately I'll most likely use it as a reference from time to time (with a tab open to wikipedia).

I found this book disappointing because it could have been a truly great book. What it's got going for it: Aaronson is very smart and reasonably eloquent. The table of contents is fantastic. He understands the material backwards and forwards.What it's got against it: Scott makes two terrible mistakes. First, he tries overhard to be conversational. Some of this is just offputting, like the many appearances of profanity in the book. (What possible purpose could this serve?) But in many cases, he simply fails to take advantage of print as a medium. You can explain things multiple times in multiple ways. More formal and less formal. Basic idea and then development. This is never done. Everything is said basically once, at some almost completely unpredictable level of detail and formality.The second problem is that Aaronson makes no distinction -- and I mean *no* distinction -- between what he actually knows and what he only thinks about. In some cases, he's speculating on things that other people know well, but he just goes on as if his opinion were gospel. A case in point is where he supports the view -- still not mainstream, I don't think -- that something "weird" happens when you cross the event horizon of a black hole not for any physical reason, but because he simply felt that "it should be that way." I'm sorry. If I want to adopt someone's vague intuition on this as physically accurate, I'll ask a physicist.In other cases, he's speculating on things that no one knows about. But he still presents his speculations as if they were fact.It's really a pity. I would have been pretty happy reading those speculations if they had only been clearly identified as such.To see how a book like this can be done, check out Tegmark's "Our Mathematical Universe." That book is considerably less technical than this one (and the subject matter is very different), but does a wonderful job of avoiding the pitfalls into which Aaronson has fallen.

This book will get you thinking about a variety of topics! It's called "Quantum Computing since Democritus" but it is really about computation complexity, including what happens when you put quantum mechanics into the mix. For the purposes of this book, that means considering generalized probability (complex amplitudes) which is in essence what quantum mechanics is about! (As you can guess, Chapter 9 "Quantum" was one of my favorite chapters).The only negative is that as a set of lecture notes, they are somewhat uneven. Some of it is easy going, while other sections will require considerable work on the readers part to get through.
