Ethan Katsh is Professor Emeritus of Legal Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Director, National Center for Technology and Dispute Resolution. He is one of the founders of the field of Online Dispute Resolution and has published widely in the law and technology and dispute resolution fields. He authored Law in a Digital World (Oxford, 1995); The Electronic Media and the Transformation of Law (Oxford, 1989); Online Dispute Resolution: Resolving Conflicts in Cyberspace (Co-authored with Janet Rifkin, 2001). Orna Rabinovich-Einy is an associate professor (senior lecturer) at the Faculty of Law at the University of Haifa. Her areas of expertise are alternative dispute resolution, online dispute resolution, and civil procedure, with research focusing on the relationship between formal and informal justice systems, dispute resolution system design and the impact of technology on dispute resolution.

The internet has fundamentally altered our methods for transacting, relating, communicating and exchanging information – and the scope at which we do so. And, with each online interaction, comes the potential for conflict.As a professor in the field of conflict resolution, I’ve been involved in the field of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) for over a decade. I don’t often review books, but I’ve decided to share my thoughts on one once-in-a-decade book: Digital Justice, by Ethan Katsh and Orna Rabinovich-Einy. This book – in equal parts descriptive, analytical and visionary – identifies the increased potential for conflict that our age challenges us with, and details ODR’s potential to address it - improving our online and offline experiences, transactions and interactions.Before non-jurists head for the hills, I’ll note that this is not a legal text, nor is it written primarily for lawyers. Discussing Digital Justice, the authors are not focusing on ‘how can we bring the court system online?’ (although, that is certainly one aspect of Digital Justice). Swap out ‘Justice’ for ‘Recourse,’ ‘Resolution,’ or ‘Solution,’ and you’ll have a clear idea of what the book is about: How can we leverage the power of technology to resolve disputes, provide recourse to people who have been harmed, or to otherwise identify, anticipate, and solve potential problems? While this book is certainly of great importance to anyone dealing in conflict engagement and resolution, its implications range far beyond this field; anyone in the fields of law, management, e-commerce, social media, customer relations, internet innovation, and public policy, would do well to read this book. And – ODR, as a field, would do well to have more voices and innovators interested or involved in its development.One noticeable difference between earlier writing on ODR and Digital Justice, is that whereas the former is written in a tone infused with optimism and tentativeness, Digital Justice’s overall tone is one of inevitability. ODR has arrived, will continue to expand, and will leave no landscape of human activity unaltered.The authors discuss the first waves of ODR activity, much of which involved efforts to conduct human-guided, online, versions of traditional resolution processes – primarily, mediation and arbitration, with technology providing, primarily, the communication conduit between parties.While some of these efforts were successful, the authors suggest that they are, at most, adjunct to the full promise of ODR. This lies, firstly, in ODR’s potential to resolve the staggering volume – hundreds of millions - of disputes resulting from online transactions. Digital Justice doesn’t stop there, going on to describe ODR’s role in creating a better future by offering us the first opportunity to connect our understanding of conflict to Big Data. Certainly, this might result in better resolutions. More importantly, it allows us to track back along disputes’ unfolding, examining their genesis and development. With this understanding in hand, preventative measures can be taken – and humanity might actually be able to get ahead of certain types of conflict, preventing them or channeling them constructivelyThe authors describe five areas in which ODR has great impact: e-commerce, social media, court systems, healthcare and the workplace. In each of these, the authors detail the inroads that ODR has made, and the potential ODR has for transforming the way information is communicated, disputes are resolved, problems are solved, and data translated into preventative improvements. Of course, these five areas are only examples. It would be hard to identify any aspect of life, in large parts of the world, in which technology does not play a role. Any such area invites Digital Justice -thinking, which entails recognizing an area in which people require recourse, and providing them with a technology-based pathway for obtaining it.I hope I’m not putting any unwarranted pressure on the authors by saying that, having finished the book, I can’t wait for the sequel to come out (or, in academic terms, a second edition). As a comprehensive and well thought out view of Druidry, I recommend this book. It gives a view of Druidry based on the AODA (Ancient Order of Druids in America) system of which Greer is the leader. While this book provides all the information a person needs to start on the path of Druidry, I would recommend also reading one of the fine books by Philip Carr-Gomm or Emma Restall-Orr to see a slightly different perspective.

Excellent book, clearly written. It provides concrete information about druidry history, current practice, symbolism, and the ogham, Throughout the history section, I felt like the author offered a discerning, academically-sound analysis of what we know instead of taking the classic everything-you-ever-heard-is-true approach. Enough detail was provided about the three rays of light, three circles of manifestation, and three elements of nature that you can actually DO something with the knowledge, instead of needing to pay someone else for more information. A book worthy of my time.

Like many who come to this book, I know John Michael Greer for his Hermetic and general audience political writings. I was aware that he was the AODA's archdruid as well as having an affiliation with ADF, an more explicitly reconstructionist polytheist group. Greer admits that revival Druidry is largely inspired by Masonic, Hermetic, and Victorian romantic revivalist lore and is ecumenical in his approach here. Most of the "Celtic" references are Welsh and there is no theological commitment explicitly made the practice. Greer admits that these roots are early modern and not ancient, and while this will displease some, it is also more honest than some claims to the traditional relationship to Druidry.Like many, I find much of the ritual magic here to be anachronistic to Druidry, although Greer admits this, and just beyond my use of ritual practices. The historical part of the book, which is the first section, was refreshing modest its claims and did accurate the origins interesting, although if you are primarily interested in this aspect of the book, Ronald Hutton's books on Druids are much more detailed. The second part deals with the triads and paths, largely related to the curriculum of the AODA. I admit I do find AODA's take on meditation interesting if mostly speculative.While the most useful to Druidry revitalists in the AODA and OBOD--Celtic Reconstructions and even the ADF druids may not find this as usual--even an outsider to the world like myself can find nuggets of wisdom and use here

I love the fact that this book says right up front that it's not trying to be the "be-all-end-all" authority on Druidry. What it does do is explore Druidry as it's evolved to what it is today, and the beliefs and practices of druids, as well as differentiating between various types of druids on both sides of the Atlantic. I really appreciate the way the author presents the philosophies, the differences, and the history and evolution of Druids and Druidry. It's a really great read! Answered a lot of questions.

Greer does a fantastic job relating, comparing, and showing the stark differences and similarities between The Historical Druids, the Revivalist movement of the self-proclaimed "Druids," and finally, to that of the modern movement known simply as "Druidry." His information is valid, informative, and concise. There was clearly a lot of research and time that went into putting this book together. Greer leaves practically no stone unturned, and the reader will be pleased to walk away informed rather than mis-lead.

This book is well worth the buy. Unlike so many other authors, john makes sure to explain that this is modern druidry, not ancient druidry. He doesnt try to pass off anything as ancient knowledge and even explains that some of the main texts of modern druidry is questionable when you consider whether its ancient or not. He gets you to understand that this is not important. druidry is a way of life, not a religion or a set of dogmas set in stone. Feel welcome no matter what your religion, its about reverance for the earth,land and changing the way you approach modern societies wasteful ways that everyone just accepts as "The way to be". This is by no means an ecofreak book though. It offers ways to change but doesnt act snoody or self rightous.This book is full of mystiscm aswell. It has several elemental charts, including the druid elementals, in depth ritual instructions and wheel of the year info aswell. It lays down the basics of druidism and at the end of the chapters it has a list of suggested reading. On top of this it has a section on the Ogham alphabet, instructs you on the divinitory meaning and such.It also covers meditation. Color breathing, thats all Im gonna say, you need to read the rest lol.It lays down the paths, earth path, sunpath, moon path. And it gives you the 1st degree corriculum, so bassically you can get started right away on your path to druidism. btw i am a follower of the witch path and this is a great way to suppliment that or any religious path.I would reccomend this book to all who are on spiritual paths in life.

Brilliant. An easy enough read to be of real help to the novice practitioner but with multiple layers unfolding with each reading and with continuing practice of the druidry path. Its beauty is in its simplicity and straightforwardness while not only allowing but actually promoting the customization of its teaching and rituals in ways that mesh with your own beliefs, experience, and path of choice. An excellent story with a level of characterization difficult to achieve in only 160 pages. Murderbot was a well developed character with traits which quickly made me interested in finding out how it was going to handle the situation it was in. Very engaging to watch it become more aware of its humans on their space exploration mission. I got a good chuckle to find that Murderbot withdrew from the noisy, emotional, overwhelming world of the humans by watching feeds of entertainment programs.The ending for this segment was a very good setup for more stories to come. I was a little apprehensive about the length of the story because I have been disappointed by short stories and novellas in the past because they never fully engaged my emotions. I didn't need to worry about that with this story by Martha Wells and I am definitely looking forward to reading the continuing adventures of this Imitative Human Bot Unit.

Oh, how I loved this book. SecUnit, referred to only in their own internal monologue as Murderbot, is a part-organic, part-machine artifical intelligence who has hacked their governor switch so that they don't have to obey commands. Yet they continue to do so, while remaining indifferent--or actively opposed to being around--the human crew it serves. Murderbot would much rather read or watch a soap opera than interact with their clients.As a security unit, Murderbot generally serves clients who have bid for their services: in this case, a small crew surveying a planet. When things start to go wrong, Murderbot has to decide how much to reveal of their own self-determination. The reactions that Murderbot and the crew have to each other as they get to know each other better under difficult circumstances are so wonderful.Murderbot's voice is engaging, and the plot zips along. I just meant to start this novella, but I ended up reading the whole thing in one delightful sitting. No spoilers about the end, but I really loved both the choices the crew made, and a particularly startling one that Murderbot made. I will be very eagerly anticipating the second Murderbot Diary.

The Murderbot series is a pretty good read but definitely not worth the $33.96 price. It is really one book, divided into novella-length stories – an very annoying marketing ploy. I bought the $3.99 first book and that would have been it for me, if my nephew hadn’t given me the other three. The story is a biography of an Artificial Intelligence during one mission, and the humans, augmented humans, bots and other artificial intelligences he meets along the way. A surprisingly engaging read about a self-aware, jaded security cyborg that has hacked its behavioral controls and become addicted to watching entertainment media that it has surreptitiously downloaded. Needless to say, this addiction conflicts with its primary mission to ensure the health and safety of its human clients while they survey leased planets which will be stripped of their resources by the lessees.The cyborg walks a thin line between acting normal and exercising some measure of autonomy without attracting the attention of clients or its corporate overseers. Balancing this new found freedom while executing its security mission makes for a very clever and entertaining story that will definitely hit the sweet spot for even the most discerning Sci-FI fans

What a brilliant premise: a sentient construct, bored and annoyed by real humans, but who spends hours watching media serials, movies, and listening to music. And yet, running through the story, is the suggestion of all that media is helping Murderbot become self-determined. All Systems Red is a great, fast, fun read that kept me up well past my bedtime with action and adventure, humor, and great commentary on what it means to be human--or not. Highly recommend.

I hate to give such a low rating to a book I think is written well, but 2 stars is a reflection of my enjoyment level for this one.At first, I thought "All Systems Red" was going to be a win. The voice from page 1 is just spot on. Murderbot is hilarious, and I laughed out loud multiple times. Sadly, though, that's where my enjoyment ended. There's no intriguing plot here, and every character except our faulty robot narrator is totally static and uninteresting.I can see why a lot of people have enjoyed this novella. It's funny and fast-paced. But it also fell flat for me. I think I'm done with the Murderbt diaries.

I've been anxiously awaiting The Murderbot Diaries, ever since the first teaser chapters were released. As expected, Martha Wells did not fail to deliver another phenomenal story.Our hero is SecUnit, an AI robot that has hacked its own governor module and found this universe's answer to Netflix. Bored with the mind-numbing security detail for a routine geological survey, it just wants to get back to base so it can watch the latest episode of its favorite serial show. And, as Wells would say, that's when everything went to ****.SecUnit/Murderbot is an intelligent and compassionate being, with a healthy dose of social anxiety. It has reservations about its human companions, but still works tirelessly to ensure their survival. Woven throughout the plotline, though, is the not-so-subtle discussion about whether S.U. is merely a tool, to be utilized and then cast aside, or a being worthy of the same dignity and respect as any other human.I can't wait to see what the future holds for S.U.! An excellent start to this new series!!

I have lived, worked, studied, and traveled in China. I wish that this book had been available several decades ago when I first went to live there. It would have saved me a lot of puzzlement, frustration and occasional embarrassment. This book is full of very practical advice and insight for the non-Chinese visitor, and can help ease your transition and aid your communication, whether you're a tourist who is just travelling for a short while, or someone who plans to live in China long-term.There are other books on Chinese culture and language, but nothing I've seen approaches the everyday practicality of this book. Even as a person who is quite familiar with China, I found the book to be extremely useful, and I found explanations and solutions for a number of frustrating cultural dissonances that I had never really figured out on my own, but make perfect sense when I saw them explained.Anyone from the U.S. who is living in China or is planning on visiting China would do well to read this book. It will go a long way towards reducing unnecessary friction and making your stay much more enjoyable.

Just finished the e-book this week, and can say with confidence that the author has a good grasp of Chinese cultural norms. He gives excellent advice for both short-term visitors and longer-term expats as to how to have the greatest chances for a happy experience and success in the "Middle Kingdom".My wife is Shanghainese, and while we live in Denver, we go to China frequently as she needs to care for her widowed mother often. I've personally been there six times for a total of over six months since 2009. It is a wonderful and fascinating country to experience, and everyone who can do so should absolutely visit China at least once. However, it can be rather difficult to adjust and get most out of the journey, especially if the visitor isn't fluent in Mandarin and is traveling independently (and not with a group or packaged tour). I am lucky in that my wife can act as my private guide and interpreter since I don't know the language well, but most others aren't so lucky. That's where a book like Decoding China comes in so handy.It is a useful handbook even for those fluent in the language and studying in China, or those working or with business activity there. Many of the "codes" of the culture are discussed, such as how to behave in restaurants, at banquets, the practice of gift-giving, taking off shoes in someone's home, or even how to read and obtain train tickets. I have personally experienced many of the situations discussed in the book, and can confirm that the cultural norms described in the book are true. This is often vital information to know, especially in advance of actually finding oneself in any of the many situations being discussed. Chinese culture is often about face and being polite, not offending those with whom one interacts. Decoding China will really help the typically loud and gregarious Americans, especially, in mixing well with this great but often challenging culture to get used to. It could actually help in making friends and lifetime relationships!I highly recommend picking up a copy of Decoding China, or downloading the e-book, in advance of traveling to China. The tips and advice given are numerous, sound, and accurate based on my own experiences. No other China travel books that Ive seen are quite like this one, and you'll be glad you got it!

If you have never been to China this is a good primer. However, if you have spent some time there most of what is mentioned will be pretty well already understood. The descriptions of things are pretty accurate but not too detailed so if you are looking for real detailed information go elsewhere. If you want a quick overview of almost everything involved in what you may see in China, its a solid read

this is a great book (must have) for anyone studying chinese and planning to study or work in china.or if you already have experience in china it does clarify and give you a greater understanding of day to day things.it is also a good book if you are just planning to do an extended holiday in china - it will make travelling thru china much easier - it's very insightful and current!maybe not worth buying if you are only planning a short stay in china ie - 1 or 2 weeks.

Best read you can do before heading to China. Author covers Chinese culture into a good depth without overwhelming the reader. I've been to China a few times, and I find the information in this book to be accurate and it does a great job at highlighting the most applicable parts of the culture that are of interest to a foreigner.

Definitely insightful if you are planning to live in China.

Great help and guide when I was studying abroad in Wuhan, China! Has some phrases that will be helpful to get around as well as information to prepare you before AND when you get there!

Everything you need to know about China is in this book. It helped guide my frustrations and lack of understanding when I first arrived in China last year. It's a great read for anyone preparing to make the big move to China.
