This is a compact intro into caving. I learned something new with every paragraph, and that is what I like in a book. Every chapter provides no-nonsense instructional material and thus a time-efficient way to learn. Only the preface/intro is a bit unfocused. It's a practical book with clear and compelling explanations, about 200 pages strong and amply illustrated.Various technological advances have found their way into the 2009 edition, such as LED headlamps, digital cave photography, and even videography.Among my favorite tidbits are the wisdom of eating a substantial breakfast on the day of the caving trip, long crawls where you cannot turn around, the physical concept of the fall factor for a rope, the warning that an on-camera flash will reflect on otherwise unnoticed fog, and the use of photo stacking for cave photography. That said, the book is far more systematic than this random list of items may suggest.As others have pointed out, the book is centered on Great Britain. Where location matters, the rest of the world receives at most half of the attention. Life in caves is divided into Britain and 'overseas'. 'Where to cave' dedicates 12 pages to the UK and 2 pages to North America, where most native speakers of English live.In conclusion, I really like this book, because it's tremendously useful and up to date---also beautifully illustrated.

The Complete Caving Manual left me feeling unsatisfied. I am a novice caver who has only been twice. I don't know enough to know what questions I should be asking, so while I felt that the information provided was good, I didn't feel like it made me a whole lot more confident than I was before. There is a lot of information about cave life, safety, conservation, and things like that that were interesting. Most of the examples talked about caving in Britain, so if you aren't in the UK, you will have to relate in a more general way. I will keep this book. It may become more useful to me as my knowledge grows, but in the meantime I am looking for something else as well.

I have had personal experience with Mr. Sparrow and find him to be a very competent caving instructor. His book, which I wish I had autographed, is very insightful. Mr. Sparrow has taken me caving several times and have felt completely safe and at ease as a novice. Highly recommend this book and his caving services.From the start of this book it gives you the very basics you need to know about caves and caving. Don't go caving without at least having this book on hand. What a guide.

First, the caveat to my review: I am probably unique among the reviewers of this book in that I am not a nuclear engineer. I have a strong educational and professional background in chemistry, physics, and math, and have been working on projects involving engineered safety systems and risk management in other technologically advanced industries. I have recently become involved in talks with representatives from the nuclear industry. For my own preparation I undertook the long hard slog through the Lamarsh-Baratta book, "Introduction to Nuclear Engineering" (Third Edition) to help me grasp background information and concepts in this field. Although I was sometimes initially unclear about the use of units (barns, dollars, etc.) and nomenclature (meat, safe shutdown earthquake, etc.) I generally found the text to eventually explain them adequately. One critique is that at some points in the text the authors use terminology freely without first defining it, only to define it much later. I found this and the relatively large number of typographical errors to be distracting.This is clearly a very complex subject, and would no doubt be helped by good classroom instruction. Nonetheless, I still found considerable value in the book. I liked chapter seven, "The Time-Dependent Reactor" particularly well, and especially found sections 7.3 and 7.5 "Control Rods and Chemical Shim" and "Fission Product Poisoning" to be enlightening. I found the commentary on reactor stability and the explanation of post-shutdown Xenon-135 buildup and reactor deadtime extremely helpful. I also found section 7.6 on incore fuel management useful.From my experience in aviation (where it is a common parameter), I enjoyed the discussion of the utility of the Reynolds number in section 8.4, and found the ensuing discussions of turbulent flow, liquid metals, and boiling heat transfer to be fascinating. My safety systems background is primarily in aviation, where it is stressed that every design is a compromise: I was pleased to see the same acknowledged on p. 455 by Bill Minkler (who now writes the "Backscatter" commentary for "Nuclear News") with his quote that reactor design is "the art of compromise."I was pleased with chapters nine ("Radiation Protection") and eleven ("Reactor Licensing, Safety, and the Environment"), which are the most directly applicable to me. The concept of "Relative Biological Effectiveness" is well covered beginning on p. 472, and the discussions of radiation protection are helpful. I found the section dealing with deterministic versus stochastic effects of radiation on pp. 479-480 to be helpful, and thought the glossary of radiation protection on pp. 539-542 to be a valuable reference. I wanted to better understand the principles of Monte Carlo analysis, which is covered in chapter ten, and while much of the discussion was helpful, it was a bit more general than I had expected.The overview of reactor licensing in chapter eleven is quite helpful, although becoming a bit dated. The discussion of multiple barriers to prevent to escape of radiation begins on p. 623 and provides an excellent general overview to the safety systems involved at a reactor site. Section 11.4 ("Dispersion of Effluents") was excellent overall, with plume formation and diffusion of effluents well covered for all Pasquill conditions (except G). This was an area new to me, as I have minimal meteorological knowledge, and I found the qualitative explanations and illustrations to be excellent, although the mathematical reasoning was at some points a bit hard to follow.The discussion of Design Basis Accidents (and particularly LOCA scenarios) beginning on p. 681 is excellent, as is the recap of the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents which follow. I was pleased to see the introduction to risk management beginning on p. 711, which discusses 10CFR50.34a requiring operators to keep radioactive materials in effluents "as low as reasonably achievable." Oddly, the book the fails to name the acronym that logically follows from this (ALARA, of course) or discuss its use in the contemporary nuclear community to any significant degree.There is a lot of great content here, and while I am sure that I missed some of the more intricate mathematical nuances of the book, I think it was helpful to me overall. The book is sometimes a bit unclear, and some of the mathematical reasoning seems a bit fuzzy. A bigger complaint is that each chapter has numerous problems at the end, yet there is no answer key to determine if you did the problem correctly.I don't claim to have as much experience in the field as the vast majority of people who will read and review this book, but I do believe that overall the book, while not perfect, gives a good introduction to the subject, and will serve as a valuable reference in the future.

If you get the paperback edition, be aware that it is not technically supposed to be sold in the US (it says so in the red triangle in the upper left-hand corner) and that it is lacking the tables and charts in the back.And, of course, like everyone else has said, a lot of the actual numbers in the book are wrong.

 When I purchase a used book, I expect it to have cosmetic defects. I do not expect it to have functional defects. This book was described as used-acceptable condition. The book arrived with a broken spine, which was pulling away from the pages, the only thing holding the book cover onto the pages was the paper liner glued to the cover. Sorry that is not what I would call acceptable condition. Yes you can still read the text, but the whole thing is one drop away from falling apart completely.

This book is well written, and covers a lot of important material reasonably well. You will learn a lot by reading it.It does however have one huge defect for anyone who because of poor quality teaching, or because they are just really interested in the field, has decided to use the book to teach themselves Nuclear Engineering. There are no solutions to any problems in the book. Most textbooks, at least introductory text books, give numerical answers to selected problems. This makes it possible for a student to do a problem, and ensure that he did it correct. Without it working problems is an exercise in futility as you will never know if you did them correctly. Since working out problems is the single best way to learn a technical subject you are probably best looking elsewhere for a book to learn from.

This is the handbook everyone STILL uses apparently.Monte Carlo is not covered here, though there are places that is covered better.

I have studied the most important chapters of the book "Introduction to Nuclear Engineering". It is more than an introduction. I found the book to be a very good one for someone with some fundamental knowledge of nuclear technology. When I started the reading of the book, I had some knowledge already. The book helped me to go deeper into the nuclear subject. I found the example problems to be very good. I really recommend this book. I did not find that many typos as other reviewers claim.

I read the book cover-to-cover. For a third edition, it has an astounding number of typos and errors - dozens per chapter - many math blunders - a few conceptual mistakes. It's fairly distracting from the material. The reader is constantly second-guessing the text - looking for the next mistake which is never far away. There's something dysfunctional about this publishing team to continue ignoring the huge number of errors now into this third edition. (The 'errata' list at Prentice-Hall website is obsolete. Those have already been corrected in our copy, printed 2005. Their list says nothing about the many errors we observed.)

For a book that is supposed to be an intro to nuclear engineering, it is very vague.The questions in the homework are difficult to answer if the book is the only source we are using as a reference.There are several typos through out the book.Amazon was super fast delivering the book though...great service.

Paper minis are not my favorite thing. My wargaming background has me preferring 3d solutions wherever possible. But sometimes you just don't have the right mini, or don't feel safe taking your painstakingly painted figures to a given venue.In those situations, pawn boxes can shine. You get an adequate amount of bases included for most any single encounter. You get a bunch of pawns arranged in groups like snake cultists/monks, bandits, thieves, a couple other cults, a secret society, evil church, and there's even still some large pawns like horses, giant snakes, lions, and so on.If you like pawns, this is the box to get for humanoid enemies. I think there may be a couple orcs and some demon dudes, but this is where you go for humanoid enemies from the humanoids generally accepted by society.

Great value. The cardboard minis are a tad wide for my tastes, but they fit in the 1" squares okay. I would like more bases, but they DO provide more than enough that a reasonable person should need. Well animated, sturdy and thick. Can't beat it for the value.

The prints are high quality and the art is gorgeous. Our party had a lot of fun looking through it, we ended up using a few tokens for our characters. Small gripe: a few of the arts are printed a bit high up, so that if you punch out the token part of the art gets cut off. Doesn't really affect the quality, though.

These are absolutely the best way to amass a large collection of "figures" for your Pathfinder or DnD game. Miniatures are, of course, preferable but they're expensive compared to these. These are great quality and printed on tough card stock.

Excellent mix of humanoid figures, along with some a few non-humanoids. A great supplement to any GM who doesn't want to keep using blank bases for there generic enemies.

The quality is what I have come to expect from paizo, that is quite good. The Villain Codex box helps you nicely round out your human/humanoid pawns from the NPC Codex. If you utilize the pathfinder pawns and need a bucket load of humanoids, this is the box for you.

Incredibly valuable for filling an rpg world with interesting npcs. Great selection of pawns and brilliant artwork.

Modern colleges have Computer Science departments that utilize modern languages but if you're over 40, you probably learned Pascal in college and are comfortable diving straight into Delphi. On the other hand, if you didn't grow up watching Hee Haw and Little House on the Prairie, you probably need to start with the basics.Most online tutorials are VERY outdated and assume you already know some Pascal. Same with most books. Nick Hodges published a great Delphi book in 2014 that covers advanced topics like unit testing, design patterns, and dependency injection but his book will not teach you Delphi.That brings me to this overpriced book. The first thing I noticed was that it was published in 2005 (eye roll). Then I noticed the reviews were good and one was written in 2013. Furthermore, the reviews here showed the book was for beginners. I struggled with my decision because I wasn't sure if it would apply to the current IDE (XE6) and it's very expensive. After reading it, I'm convinced that it helped. The book is accurate and well written. This book targets people with ZERO programming experience. This book teaches basic programming (very basic) using Delphi. I'm an experienced Software Developer with a Computer Science degree (dated 2010 not 1990) and used the book to quickly familiarize myself with the Delphi IDE and language syntax. This is purely an introductory text. By 'introductory' I mean it couldn't be more basic. A 5th grader could learn programming with this book. I don't mean that in a bad way, just be aware. The first two chapters are more about learning the IDE than Delphi. If you're an experienced programmer that's already familiar with the Embarcadero IDE and simply need to learn Delphi, you may want to skip this book and go straight into 'XE2 Foundations' by Chris Rolliston. Unlike this book, 'XE2 Foundations' is an introduction to Delphi that assumes you've seen a computer before. If you do start with this book, XE2 Foundations is a good follow-up.One minor complaint is that this book goes out of its way not to mention memory management. If you told me to write a 550 page introductory programming book without using the word 'memory' a single time I would have said, "impossible!" None of the examples require explicit freeing of memory but the book aims to be an introduction to programming so something as important as memory management should have at least been given a few paragraphs in chapter one.This is the fourth edition and has been reprinted 10 times! The last printing was in 2013. The exercises in the book use Borland's (now Embarcadero) Delphi 7 IDE and show the changes made to Delphi 8. We had to learn Delphi fast because our office started collaborating on a development project written in Delphi. I had never written a single line of Delphi code nor had I ever used a Borland/Embarcadero IDE. The book's diagrams showing the older IDE layout aren't radically different from the current version (currently XE6). If you're using Delphi 7 or later (2002 - 2014), you shouldn't have a problem working through the examples except for Chapter 17 (Reporting). Chapter 17 assumes you have access to RAVE Reports (Delphi 8 installation disk) but XE6 comes with Fast Reports and they are NOT similar. After reading this book, I'm more efficient and productive using Embarcadero's IDE. Experienced programmers will finish the book quickly while becoming familiar with the IDE and basic Delphi syntax. Beginners will learn some programming basics using Delphi.I enjoyed the book but minus one star for being outdated and overpriced.

An objective introduction to Pascal language and Delphi IDE. The tuition, step by step, is very easy to follow and let you learn the basics of this programming software. A have lots of books about Delphi, but this is the only one I found to start learning, for sure. Very well written. After reading this one, you can choose a more advanced one.

I don't write reviews as I rarely have time to formulate a good one. But this book is such a great introduction to the Object Pascal programming language and the Delphi IDE that I felt like I owed it to the writers to leave a review.If you are interested in learning delphi and have never programmed before then this is the book for you!

This is a good book to get started with whether you are familiar with programming on not. I worked my way through the book from the beginning but stopped eventually when I realized I was getting a bit board and needed bigger challenges. I also use it as a reference occasionally.

I am happy regarding the leading time to receive the book, I obtained it within two weeks' time.The carton packaging is okay as the book was in good condition on reception.I will definitely continue to buy books online via amazon.com
