"The Rise of Rome" is actually a revised compendium of Plutarch's Parallel Lives: Complete, in which he analyzed and brought forth commentary about Greek and Roman rulers of Antiquity, focusing on their similarities and how they helped create the world of Antiquity. This nice compendium just focuses on the Roman statesmen who founded the city (supposedly) and led her to greatness, eventually overtaking the Greeks as the proto-Western civilization that would dominant the late ancient world.The book itself is only 583 pages of text from Plutarch's larger work, with some commentary by the authors introducing the reader to the individual that Plutarch is writing about, so that provides additional historical commentary that is valuable. At the end, it also contains a few nice maps and a large bibliography and index."The Rise of Rome," is not one of Plutarch's actual works, as mentioned, this is just a revised version of his Lives solely looking at the Romans but for Roman historians or lay persons, this is a nice selection as one can look just at the Roman figures. Plutarch's "The Fall of the Roman Republic" is his singular work covering Roman history during his lifetime. It is a worthwhile book and a nice revision. On a side note about Plutarch himself, his account of the Lives is generally regarded as a classic work of ancient history, but is filled with embellishments (as was common among Antiquity historians), so that is just a forewarning. The work starts with the mythical founder of Rome (contra to Virgil's The Aeneid) with Romulus and ends with Aemilius Paullus of the notable Paullus Family. The content on the Elder Cato is also very worthwhile.

I just picked up this graphic novel at Book Expo in NY, and met Dr. Ruth herself. She was so friendly and kind! When I sat down to read this book, I was utterly amazed at the hardships Dr. Ruth had to overcome, and the bravery she showed in her life. I highly recommend this book for anyone to read, kids and adults alike. It tells the story of how her parents protected her from the holocaust and the many twists and turns of her life. And if you are wondering, its definitely rated PG. What an amazing life she has lived.

Loved it! It's sweet, poignant and funny!

Summary: Cheryl Burke, former professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars, tells about her experience working on Dancing with the Stars as well as her childhood, including sexual abuse by a family friend.Pros: I'm a big fan of Cheryl and Dancing with the Stars so I was very interested to read this biography. I learned some interesting things I didn't know about Cheryl, such as she was very camera shy when she first started on television. I am also a childhood sexual abuse survivor, so it was inspiring to read about Cheryl's experience, particularly when she went to trial to testify against her abuser. This was very similar to my experience, and so I was particularly interested in this section.Cons: The book is slightly disjointed and jumps around following styles of dance, rather than anything chronological. The book was also written awhile ago, so there is nothing about her recent partners. There is also very little new information about Dancing with the Stars or much a fan wouldn't already know. It seems that the book was written too early. I think Cheryl's career and life will continue to become more nuanced and interesting and I would rather read a book written by her five years from now versus one from a few years ago.Conclusion: If you are a fan of Cheryl, you will enjoy the book but you won't learn much you didn't already know.

I sat down this morning with my book club selection and thought about reading some more of it but I knew that this book had been delivered to my Kindle a few days ago and was dying to get a taste. I'm a crazed DWTS fan and have always respected Cheryl's immense talent, but was leery that this book might be a trivial let down, I was wrong!!!I decided I'd sneak a taste and that turned into a 4 hour cover-to-cover read with YouTube stops along the way. What a treat!!! Her words made me laugh and they also brought a few tears to my eyes as well. Cheryl and I share the same hometown of the Bay Area and I'm also half Asian and Caucasian, so I've always kind of related to her on some level and although I'm 19 years her senior, I've always felt a kinship to her. This book is a really easy, entertaining, heartfelt and self-actualized read. I was tremendously surprised at her maturity and overall sense of accomplishment, not just in her professional life but at the adversity she has had to rise above. She seems to be a woman who's really tried and succeeded at learning the lessons we all learn in our twenty's and not making any excuses for them or justifying any lack of responsibility for their existence. I commend her as there are many people far older still trudging that beaten road!If you are a fan of dancing in any way, I think you will find this a fulfilling way to spend a few hours! And thanks Cheryl, for your honesty and candid words, they were a joy, as are you.

Ms. Burke told her story well. It was interesting to understand how she developed from a young competitive ballroom dancer into a worldly public figure, and to hear how she surmounted the issues of her new-found public life as well as the personal issues she had from her childhood experience.It would be interesting to read an autobiography or biography of her mother after reading this. She sounds just as interesting as Cheryl.The title is apt because through dancing, Cheryl learned the lessons of interaction with other people and entities, how it can go badly wrong, and how it can go amazingly well.

Nice behind the scenes description of the relationships formed between professional dancer and contestant.I bought this as a prelude to the new season that was to start in a month. I was disappointed that Cheryl was not one of the professionals in this season. It was great however to see all the projects and activities that are making Cheryl flourish on her own! It was also very interesting to read how her childhood and relationships helped her to grow into the person she is today. I look forward to seeing her on the show again in the future!

This book is an interesting read for those who are into Dancing with the Stars. But overall, there are no significant events or tribulations that make me want to pick up an autobiography/memoir.

As DWTS addict, I enjoyed this book a lot and it was icing on the cake that I actually got to meet Ms Burke soon after buying the book. She seems just as nice in person as you'd be led to believe in reading the book. It's interesting to have read about some of the fears and challenges she's had to over come and then compare that to the confident performer and TV personality she's become outside the ballroom.

I enjoyed reading this book, there was a lot of info that I never knew about her included in this book, such as her being a victim of childhood molestation & how she was afraid to tell anyone. If you are a Cheryl fan, you really should read this.

A must read for fans of DWTS . Cheryl opens up about her life and what dancing means to her and to her fellow pros. Easy to read and informative story written by a talented and very special lady.

About the Author

Prior to 1987, Dr. Gutstein was a nationally renowned developer of innovative clinical programs for children with high-risk conditions. In 1983, he received the largest grant ever awarded by the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, to develop a family-based intervention program for seriously suicidal adolescents. Dr. Gutstein earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. Between 1979 and 1987 he served as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical School. During this period, Dr. Gutstein also served as the director of Pediatric Psychology for Texas Children's Hospital. He is currently Director of The Connections Center.

This book is a careful, thorough and technical description of a compassionate, well researched, and professionally run therapy which involves and empowers parents and carers in the process of helping those they care for to ultimately be able to build their owngenuine relationships. This is something which those on the Autism Spectrum find the most difficult of all!This therapy is not merely about learning good manners or socially appropriate behaviour - but about the lifetime skill of building emotionallyappropriate, fulfilling and genuine personal relationships.

We are just starting RDI with a consultant and this book is clear and easy to understand.

Gutstein presents his RDI theory in this book. So much of what his theory involves makes incredible sense for anyone working with a person (people) with an asd spectrum disorder. This is the most insightful book on autism that I have ever read.

Hats off to Dr. Gutstein for his focus on socialization in individuals with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. His "carrot minus the stick" approach in helping people on the autism spectrum perceive benefits in social interaction is an invaluable insight. I like the way he concentrates on building strengths and providing explanations for more severe autism-spectrum behaviors.He uses what appears to me a very reasonable approach. For many people with autism, sequencing or breaking tasks and interactions down into process-friendly steps has proven helpful. He also explains how people by nature crave socialization and that people on the autism spectrum do not have the intuitive social knowledge, such as how long and when to maintain eye contact. To his credit, he does not lapse into a tired "Rain Man" stereotype; instead, he focuses on how to encourage people with autism to develop nonverbal as well as other interpersonal social skills. In just about every case, people with autism learn these behaviors cognitively and often by repeated efforts.This book certainly deserves a place of honor among professionals and families. It is for everybody.

I'm actually revising this review having reread the book and learned more about RDI, as I feel I have a better idea of what the approach is really all about now. My new in-a-nutshell assessment: there are some things I really love about RDI, and some things that I don't care for. To be fair, I would say the same about most treatment approaches.To start with the positive: I think the thing that makes RDI special are what they now call the "Child Goals". There was a time when we thought teaching children with autism to be 'social' meant drilling them on how to say "Hi, my name is ____ what's your name how are you do you want to play", and other such catch phrases that would be fairly useless on a real life, chaotic playground full of it's own hidden codes and rules. The same for abstract thought, imagination, perspective taking. Some things don't translate well to the old "10 trials" format. So a big bravo to RDI for researching this topic and developing goals based around how these skills emerge in typical development.Now for what I see as the core problems in RDI. First, it is all set up around the philosophy that if children feel competent, they will participate (as opposed to ABA, which says if children feel MOTIVATED they will participate.) So if you are trying to do a social activity with an autistic child, and they keep running away trying to go play with light switches or Thomas Tank Engine, RDI says it's because they don't feel competent. Make the situation easier, help them more, slow down, and they will happily engage with you.Nothing wrong with this philosophy, but I'm here to say, I haven't found it to be true. There is actually emerging research to suggest that children with autism may be wired to be 'systemizers' and to pay attention to more mechanical/mathematical type information while lacking typical levels of motivation to attend to social information. If this is the case for a child, you can simplify all you want and the issue isn't that they don't understand, it's that they don't care and you're not creating a reason for them to care. You can be the best teacher in the world but it won't do much for a student who is tuning you out. Second, RDI says that most of the methods used in ABA teaching are Bad with a capital B, and encourage families to really avoid these methods. Again, the problem? A lot of those methods are extremely effective with autistic children, and taking them off the table really limits your teaching tools. This includes methods such as giving the child a direct instruction or asking them a direct question, prompting them to answer or respond, or teaching new material in a very repetitive, predictable way.I think the interesting argument that you get down to here is: when teaching an autistic child, how much should you accommodate a child's autism vs. how much you should try to change it? In my mind, using ABA type methods lean more toward accommodation - teaching in a way that is easier for an autistic child and more in line with their style of learning. RDI methods stress change - you teach more in the way you would expect a neurotypical child to learn and hope they will in turn adapt to this.What I have seen to happen, in my admittedly very limited observation, is that children who are closer to that neurotypical way of thinking do well with RDI, whereas children who are more classically autistic don't seem to get much out of RDI unless it's adapted for them. For the children who have some of those base skills already, RDI can be the push they need into becoming a dynamic thinker. For a child who doesn't attend well to social information, needs to have their interest/motivations incorporated to a large degree, and doesn't learn well outside of highly structured teaching situations, I almost wonder if it's akin to teaching a deaf child with nothing but verbal direction.So my advice? I like the ideas, I do. I would recommend this therapy for high-functioning children with fairly good language and some pre-existing social motivation. For more involved children, I would recommend it as an add-on to other types of therapy such as Floortime or Verbal Behavior, that are more focused on adapting to the child's way of thinking instead of waiting for them to adapt to yours.

It's a good book. I had to get it for a class on Arthurian Romance. Although it was difficult to read at times because of the page layout. There are hardly any paragraph breaks, especially when it comes to dialog. Not to mention it does not have the Percival and the Holy Grail story, which put me at a disadvantage in my class as I could not do some assignments. The translation and the quick shipping were all great, but the formatting needs a lot of work.

Chretien of Troyes wrote four complete Arthurian Romances that are translated into readable texts in this book. It does not cover the Grail story. If you are interested in how the art of courtly love was actually portrayed in twelfth century France, these romance stories are for you.

"Arthurian Romances" is a recent translation of five of the medieval writer Chretien de Troyes' stories about King Arthur's court. The stories are Erec and Enide, Cligés, The Knight of the Cart (Lancelot), The Knight with the Lion (Yvain), and The Story of the Grail (Perceval).The book also has an appendix of Continuations of the Grail Stories, a Medieval glossary, and a good Notes section. I bought it as I was studying 'The Knight of the Cart' for a course on Magic in the Middle Ages.I found this translation more readable than some of the previous ones I tried. The Notes and Glossary were also helpful as was the Introduction. It's written in a modern style yet keeps the flavour of knighthood, battles and ladies who need rescuing but may also be enchanted. I would recommend this book to anybody studying this period in literature, or to anybody interested in King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, or if you enjoy tales of adventure, romance and magic.

I love medieval literature, and this book is one of my favorites. Here you will find the stories of four of Arthur's knights. Erec, Ivain, Cliges and Lancelot.

Beautiful in many ways and these stories carry lessons and sorrows people need to think about. The historic influence of these is undisputed except by political zealots pushing agendas of course.

This particular book explains the rules to a game that is very open-ended, very flexible, and works the imagination more than any other game that I've played. I'm aware that there are other games that attempt to do something similar but this is the game I know and it does it quite well. Yes, the rules have a few holes and vagueness that require the group to work out how they want to play it. But for the most part, it sets up a great game world, some characters to play in the world, and then opens it up for you to go anywhere and do just about anything your mind can conceive given the limits of the powers that you have chosen. With a few house rules, Mage can easily become a game of battling super heroes. Or play by the rules and run themes such as horror, espionage, politics, guerrilla warfare, or whatever makes the group happy.

I think i understand the reasons behind the change of scope on Mage Revised, when i began playing the game (since first ed.) there were a lot of things left to one's criteria, fortunately my troupe of players get along quite well and together we made something great of a system full of holes. Don't get me wrong on that last comment, the concept of the game is the most inovative i have ever played on 12 years, but for newcomers i can understand the despair one could feel at the amount of freedom the system offers. As far as the old revisions went, they got you involved on a great scale war which spanned several realities in conflict, it was very easy to forget about the real place of the fight (Earth) and get involved in petty politicing with astral spirits (Umbrood) or just get lost inside your huge tradition full of all powerful archmages who could do things you would never be able to do in several lifetimes. What they did was to cut the strings and leave all the omnipotent players outside in order to put the low level apprentices (that means you) in charge of saving the world. It may sound fun for those who are new to the system and disapponting for all who have survived titanical battles in the past. They give a simpler (and better) look at magic, the difficulty to pull the legendary rabbit out of the hat increased a lot and is nearly impossible to leave earth now. My advice: Buy this if you have never played the system and if you really like it get the second edition so you can see the difference. If you have already played the game, don't bother and keep surviving under your own system. Why the three stars? If it was the first time i read about this game i probably woud have gone for the five stars, but since i have already looked at two other version of the system i really expected more from White Wolf, if they could do it with Vampire, why not with Mage?

I somewhat disagree with the other posts by the "veterans", however that could be because this was the first Mage book I began on. I mean, yes, I disagree with the fact that some story elements are missing, Mood and the Example Of Play section for example leaves you kind of lost.Call me Technocratic, but I feel that the Paradox system is efficient, and the read overall isn't as confusing as most players can rumor it to be. "It's like rolling dice to a freakin' VCR manual!" I got the substance out of this book, but the actual purpose of a Mage after the Ascension War is still hazy to me...Which actually leaves a player with more reason to become an Ecstatic. Whatever, though. Being the die-hard White Wolf fan that I am, I'm satisfied enough with the Revised publication.

I started off knowing little about the Mage universe, or much of White Wolf, the publisher either. Thanks to this book, as well as others, I AM HOOKED! The book skillfully outlines the basic story of the Mage universe, after the Ascension War is lost by the Traditions, and gives new readers a whole world, with spell ideas, great characters, and a whole of "grey area" for Storytellers to develop their Chronicles with skill and enthusiasm. There are those who don't like the new edition, as it is not as free with some areas as the previous editions were, but I have to say, if your looking for a great direction to take gaming, and are tired of primarily point based, systems, that leave less room for imagination, give this one a try. I also heartily recommend all of the other White Wolf products, for this line, as well as Vampire: the Masquerade, and Werewolf: the Apocolypse.Enjoy!

Having played both Werewolf: The Apocalypse and Vampire: The Masquerade, I honestly didn't think too much about mage till a local person in my gaming group mentioned he ran Mage. So we all got together on a Friday night, and I was quiete impressed with the system. This book is a must have for any player or storyteller running The World of Darkness system. The book is very well written and offers insights on using mage either as standalone system or as part of The World of Darkness.

Bought this as a gift fot my husband. We both play roleplaying games, and my husband loves Mage but didn't have a book. Was amazed at the quality (like new) for the price. My husband was thrilled, he looks at it almost everyday.

The book was in pretty good condition, though I do wish there would have been a casing around it. As a collector of these kind of books, it's totally worth it.

I bought this to take on my second trip to Minneapolis and St. Paul where my daughter just started college. It's a lovely area, but I don't think the author has been to the Twin Cities. We went to a few of the shops and places mentioned and they were nothing like as described, but huge disappointments. The author assumes you are going to shop only at the Mall of America, but we were looking for small, local places. You can find out where to go from the local magazines in your hotel room. Don't wast your money on this.

I used the 4th edition (2004) of this guidebook to orient me to the Twin Cities on a week-long stay for a conference in 2006, and the book was a terrific resource. I wanted to venture off in my rental car and sightsee, and also, make like the residents eating, drinking, and appreciating neighborhoods. This urban guidebook was excellent. It really primed me for where to go, and also, I had some terrific meals along the way. Made me want to return to the Twin Cities again someday.
