Kathy Charmaz is Professor Emerita of sociology and the former director of the Faculty Writing Program at Sonoma State University. She joined the first cohort of doctoral students at the University of California, San Francisco, where she studied with Anselm Strauss. She writes in the areas of social psychology, medical sociology, qualitative methods, and grounded theory and has written, coauthored, or coedited 14 books, including two award-winning works: Good Days, Bad Days; The Self in Illness and Time, and Constructing Grounded Theory. She received the George Herbert Mead award for lifetime achievement from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction, the Leo G. I bought this book because I am taking a grounded theory course, and I also am planning to conduct research using grounded theory approach. I have previously conducted qualitative research, so I have some experience. This book by Charmaz is well-written, very clear, and organized. The best thing I liked is that she included many examples to illustrate each aspect (e.g. conducting semi-structured interviews, data analysis, coding, writing ...etc.). She also clearly explains the history of grounded theory and the different approaches used by other experts (Strauss, Glasser, Corbin ...etc.). I only caught 2 errors in the whole book, at one place there were 2 periods, the other error was also very minor (but can't remember what it was). Overall, I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in qualitative research in general, not necessarily grounded theory, a lot of Charmaz's approaches in conducting grounded theory can be applied in conducting qualitative research in general (to enhance credibility, trustworthiness ...etc.), such as being reflexive, writing memos ...etc. At the end of the book there is a glossary were you'll find the definitions for all terms, that was very helpful. Index and references were also of course included.

Such a helpful resource as I prepare to conduct a constructive grounded theory study for my dissertation! The process and the concepts behind the process make so much sense to me. Any Ph.D. learner who is planning a grounded theory study should read this excellent resource by one of the primary leaders in the development of constructive grounded theory.

I noticed most of the "helpful" reviews here are from 2000 and 2001. I picked up this book from Amazon because of the reviews, because I love reading Bruce Schneier, and because I have a personal and professional interest in Security (physical, computer, network, policy, etc.). Schneier's a fantastic author, and this book was surely a great read when it was released, but I read it this year (2011), and while many of the core principles are still 100% valid, there's a lot of material in it that is simply not remarkably relevant. True, email is still email, and many of the threats from 2005 are still valid today, but there's no discussion of the Cloud, virtual machines, or many modern/growing computer/network implementations.To be clear, I enjoyed the book. If you're interested in InfoSec, and you're an avid reader, it's definitely worth your time, but if you're looking for a great primer in the vein of most of other works by Schneier, then you should probably look elsewhere, because it simply isn't "relevant enough" to be a modern reference.

It is also the perfect book for seasoned security practitioners who want an overview of the key issues facing our community today. Schneier wrote it more than a decade ago, but its ideas still resonate. He talks about the idea that “security is a process, not a product.” With that one line, Schneier captures the essence of what our cyber security community should be about. He explains that even though we have advanced technology designed to specifically find cyber break-ins, people are the still the weakest link. He describes how cyber risk is not a special category. It is just another risk to the business. He highlights the ludicrous idea that software vendors have no liability or selling buggy code, and he was one of the first thought leaders to characterize the adversary as something more than just a hacker. He makes the case for things that the cyber security community still needs in order to make the Internet more secure, things like strengthening confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA); improving Internet privacy and Internet anonymity; and challenging the idea that security practitioners must make the Sophie’s Choice between better security or more privacy in terms of government surveillance. Finally, he anticipates the need for a Bitcoin-like capability long before Bitcoin became popular. The content within Secrets and Lies is a good introduction to the cyber security community, and Schneier tells the story well. Because of that, Secrets and Lies is candidate for the cyber security canon, and you should have read it by now.

This was a ten-star book when it came out. It is still 4.5-star relevant as a piece of modern history. I wish the author had been invited to add margin notes or revise material to bring up to 2015. Bruce foresees much of the future and had the editors decided to include an updated errata for this work it would be an essential read.

This is an excellent information security book that everyone working in this field should read. Bruce Schneier doesn't go and market specific security products and he actually is against the blatant stance that many companies take towards security, in which they want to have total security but they don't want to see it working. Instead the criticizes how companies rush into buying security products just because they're shiny and trendy instead of thoughtfully thinking about security from the design and planning phase to all phases of production.The author is very specific about the security domains without being too technical but instead focusing on the "philosophy" behind each caveat. In that regards he shows the many way crackers can harm our security and how far we have advanced in combating them. He has a sort of pessimistic view regarding this because as he claims the bad guys are already ahead of governments and other organizations because of their unwillingness to think of security as a process but rather as a product to be installed without proper metrics measurement and capacity planning.

This is basically a good book. Very readable, usually very clear, very broad scope. I think every issue that a security manager needs to know about is at least mentioned, with the really important issues discussed at length. Schneier tries (and usually succeeds) in writing for a general audience without dumbing down the important stuff. Mandatory reading if you have any interest in security.That being said, there are some nits I have to pick. The material is very ad hoc, backed up by mainly by personal (though extensive) experience and casual reading. A useful knowledge base, but limited as a source of primary information.This is aggravated by Schneier's use of non-technical examples and analogies in many of his arguments. The arguments themselves are very strong, but when he cites this historical example or that financial practice, he often gets his facts wrong. I don't suppose this has a big effect on his credibility, but it must have some.It's also a little disappointing that Schneier didn't bother to get into the general history of the Engima/Ultra business -- a prime example of his basic theme, that the smallest failure of the security process is vulnerable to machines with infinite patience.Finally, I'm very, very disappointed that Scheier fails to challenge -- and sometimes even supports -- the social conservative attitude towards hacking and reverse engineering. He points out the futility of trying to encrypt DVDs -- but barely touches on the DMCA. He speaks of general software hacking as a basically benign activity -- but he strongly supports criminal punishment even for the most non-invasive electronic "trespass". This is a point of view utterly at odds with his ideas of security considered in a complete social context.

About the Author

PATRICK O'SULLIVAN was the OHL and CHL rookie of the year in 2002 and the AHL rookie of the year in 2005. He remains the all-time leader in games, goals, assists and points for the Mississauga/Niagara franchise in the OHL. He played 334 games over eight seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild and Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL. He played in three World Junior Championships and is all-time second in games played for the USA in tournament history. He scored the gold-medal winning goal for the United States team at the world junior championships in 2004, the first gold medal in the team's history. The 30-year-old now lives in southwest Florida with his wife and two sons.GARE JOYCE is a senior writer for Sportsnet Magazine. It is hard to say I enjoyed reading a book about a father abusing his talented son but I choose to see this as a story of a boy who triumphed in spite of his father's abuse. This book is an eye-opener to the goings on behind the scene of the sport hockey. Being a relative new hockey fan it was interesting to read about the different levels of hockey leading up to possibly making it to the NHL. I am appalled that while Patrick was moving up through the different leagues that no one came to his aide in dealing with his father. The word was out there about his fathers behavior yelling at him at practices and games and the fact that most coaches in the leagues did not want to deal with the father as he developed a bad reputation as the years went by. I also wonder how red flags didn't come up when he wasn't allowed to ride the team bus or stay with a billet family. The bruises and scrapes beyond a hit in a game. Patrick's childhood was not a good one. In saying that.... he goes on to have a career in the NHL and sets many records in major junior hockey along the way to that career. Plays on the USA team for the world juniors and makes the winning goal for the gold. I am so happy that Patrick made it out of this abusive relationship with his father and has gone on to have a good life. This story will tug at your heart but worth the read. I recommend this book.

The cautionary ugly story behind the scenes, that rarely is brought up in the public but should be. The story of Patricks life on and off the ice is touching as well as informative. A talented kid, crazy-unhealthy family relationships that cause physical and psychological damages no kid/teenager should experience. It also shows the holes of old-school NHL management still being enforced and so a prospect kid can have trouble finding/getting the help he should have.I recommend reading it to any parent (or parent to be), even if you aren't an hockey fan...Tnx, Patrick and Gare for your work... As a Kings fan I just thank you for your time on the Kings and salute you Patrick for fighting through the issues and wish you nothing but peaceful happiness in your future...

After reading the stories of Sheldon Kennedy, Theo Fluery and Clint Malarchuk, I think those stories prepared me a little for what I would read from Patrick O'Sullivan. This was a rollercoaster read for me emotionally. I found I wanted to scream for Patrick to run and other times I wanted to cry. This is a book that makes you think in the end. What would you have done had you noticed something wasn't right? So many people failed Patrick through the years but he found a way to move forward, to fight for himself when no one else would. I definitely recommend this book.

Admittedly, I haven't quite finished this book yet. It's a really difficult, emotional, and raw story. I found myself having to take breaks because the content would be too emotionally intense and hard to think about. That being said, this book is definitely worth reading. Mr. O'Sullivan does not hold back in his story, and it is important that we are all aware of signs of familial abuse in the lives of children. His story is an important one.

Patrick was a great hockey player when he played here in Houston and was well respected by the fans. The book is a sad but well written story about a young man who endured much pain and heartache because of a father who tried to live his life through his son. Despite his father Patrick made it to the NHL and has a successful sport talk show on Sirrius. Wishing much success and hoping he decides to write another book.

Reading this book was difficult. I’ve been physically abused as a child and reading someone else’s account of the abuse they suffered through was hard to read. But I’m so happy that he’s working his way through it and I think he’s tougher than anything his father ever threw at him. I wish him all the success in the world

Phil Gaimon can ride much better than me, write much better than me, and eat cookies much better than me. I really want to hate his books, but the problem is they're entertaining as all hell and once I start one I just can't put it down.Even a non cyclist would possibly enjoy this. Actually no. Non cyclists only enjoy getting fat and occasionally running us over.

Phil is obviously a very talented writer, couching in hilarious humor, excellent insights he gathered in the professional ranks! Instead of going awash in deep technicality or grandios physiology, Phil relates easily in layman's language . No bitterness, here, even if there is, it's couched in humor. I wish it were twice it's length because you won't want to put it down; and just like a great race, it will all be over too soon!!

Should or shouldn't I buy yet another bike book, and at a relatively high price at that...? Well, I finally did, and no regrets whatsoever. Written with lots of wit and 'dry' humor, but also with a lot of useful tips, this book is delightful to read, and has become one of my favorites on my "Kindle shelf" :-)

Phil Gaimon's responses to reader questions are hilarious, and the book served to remind me how much I enjoyed Pro Cycling on $10 a day. Ask a Pro was a very quick read, but worth buying because I didn't read many of the articles when they were in print. The individual responses were so short, it was easy to read a couple while in line, waiting for kids, etc. Reading Phil's perspective makes me realize how lucky I am (most of the time) to be an amateur who rides and races solely for fun. Looking forward to his next book in October.

Just about any quirky, little thing you wanted to know about pro cycling is in this book. A great read, no. A fun read on the toilet or for your commute to work? Yes!!!! I'd call this book a supplement but Phil has a way of making $$ and I read his $10 a day book which I enjoyed. I think he's making more than $10 a day now. Way to go!!!

This is very entertaining! I found myself LOL'ing quite a bit, although there were times he either didn't give a real answer or I couldn't tell if he was kidding or not. Will purchase some of his other books now too.

Very similar to his other book. I enjoyed it and read it in under a week so it kept me coming back. I like his sarcasm which reminds us to not take cycling too serious unless you are a pro.

Nothing new. But still fun to read. Phil may not have won a Tour, but he would be my first choice of a rider to buy a beer

Jonathan Katz is a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, and director of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center. He has published over 100 articles on cryptography, and serves as an editor of the Journal of Cryptology, the premier journal of the field. Prof. Katz has been invited to give introductory lectures on cryptography for audiences in academia, industry, and government, as well as an on-line cryptography course through Coursera. Yehuda Lindell is a professor of computer science at Bar-Ilan University. This is a serious introduction book. I enjoyed Katz's course on Coursera.Note this is theoretical. If you are looking for material on hardware or physical attacks like side channel attacks or fault injection attacks, you will need to look elsewhere. With that said, it is useful as a reference even after you have digested the material because Katz is very particular with rigor, notation, and word choice -- the result of a mathematician who cares about communication.

As a student enrolled in a Computer Security course and considering a career in Cybersecurity Engineering, I am finding the theoretical content of this book to be useful so far. Unfortunately, as a Linux user this ebook is more difficult to access than most others, as it is NOT COMPATIBLE with the Kindle Cloud Reader nor my Kindle device. I suspect my rating would increase if this product was made compatible with those devices, but I will continue reading this book on my smartphone screen.

Awesome book on a tough subject.

I have not finished the book yet, but from material I went so far and from Jonathan Katz's course on Cryptography I think I can describe authors way of providing information. I would characterize it in two keywords: rigorous and complete. Other materials I have met were maybe more lively but this one is is the best if you are really serious about crypto. It will give all the details you need to understand and work with modern cryptographic primitives. I will teach how to prove or disprove properties of various cryptographic schemes.

A rigorous treatment based on clear assumptions and proofs derived from those assumptions. Mastering the topic is not easy, but Katz's writing is clear.

This is a GREAT book. I hate spoilers (even tiny ones) but I can say it has been one heck of an emotional roller coaster ride. I've laughed, I've sighed, wanted to punch something (or someone), and I've cried. It's INTENSE and I can't walk away from it. Who knew the son is as great of a storyteller as his dad was a singer/songwriter. Dee

This is an awesome book to have! I read it all in one day and it was great learning all those new stuff about Waylon. Definitely gives you another perspective about him and one part in the story reminded me actually of an fictional character in an Aztec West story cause *SPOILERS* he had the same kinda deal with his leg as the character had. I hope he didn't get teased about it as a kid or something.Totally recommend this book 10/10

This is a son Terry Jennings, paying tribute to his Father of this earth, Waylon Jennings. If you love your Dad, if you loved Waylon, you will love this tribute. I understand the life he lived, because my Dad was a long distance truck driver. We have a special, some times difficult relationship with our Dads when they work on the road. My Dad was also my hero. This is a book about his HERO. This is a look into the life of a man who lived most kids dream, knowing your Dad as a friend. Yes, his life was different because he worked HARD for a living for his Dad. But he enjoyed the work and appreciates the blessing he was given. He acknowledges that he knows every adventure and mishap was a Blessing. Thank You for letting us see the life, the stumbles and the side of your Dad, through your eyes. I loved this book because it was written with unconditional love from a son to his unconventional father. I've read Waylon Jennings autobiography, Jessi Colter's book and now Terry's, I gotta say they're an honest bunch. I also am happy that Terry gave credit, where credit was due. God Bless You. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!

Just finished this journey. Wish it had been longer because I enjoyed it so much. I've read a lot of books about the true country artists. I grew up to all of their music and always felt a kinship because of it. When I was in the third grade Jennifer Jennings was in my class. I went to sleepovers at her house. Though I didn't really know who Waylon was at the time I knew he was someone special by listening to my parents speak of him. I was thrilled when Terry mentioned living in Mt. Juliet in his book. The most I remember from going over there was how beautiful and glamorous Jessi was. I also remember Jennifer's big brother bugging us. I did the math and from the book, I realized that would have been Terry. There's that kinship again! Thanks for the great read Terry. You were brave to tell some of the stories you did and I thank you for it! GODSPEED!

Fabulous read for any Waylon Jennings or Jessi Colter (Waylon's wife and the author's step-mom) fan. Terry Jennings goes into detail about life on the road with his "outlaw" dad (some in more detail than I would like, such as Waylon's hotel antics, but other people eat that up so I can see why son Terry included it). What I wondered as I read was how this "road kid" with a famous father whose wild lifestyle was almost as famous as his music has become someone who gently promotes Christianity today. Maybe it was the influence of his famous mother, Jessi Colter, which Terry made clear in the book, he adored and still does. Anyway, even if you've read Waylon's auto-bio, Terry Jennings' book is a worthy read because it comes though the eyes of a teen-young adult, which is a whole different perspective. And it's written casually, an easy to read bio. If you haven't read it yet, you are missing a great part of our GREAT Waylon's life.

I read this book in two sessions, took about 8 hours...I could not put it down. The insight and perspective puts you there as it was taking place. It was like watching a movie, and when it ended, it left me wanting more...which is a good thing. There were a few times that I could keep the tears from my eyes. This is a MUST read. Thank you so much Terry for sharing your stories, and I hope that you can do it again because I believe there is more to share that would make your dad proud.

I was introduced to Waylon Jennings by my uncles, they were some cool cats, used to take me and my brothers out fishing, and well I could write a book on that one.I grew up listening to Waylon loving every minute of it.I've always been curious about what happens on the road, what goes into productions like a traveling band.This book takes you on every side road and highway there was in the 70's through 2000.I enjoyed learning more about one of my heroes, and being a father, the relationship between a father and a son.Terry has done an outstanding job in delivering in both of these areas and so much more.This book is a must read for every real country fan and father out there, as Terry quoted Buffet" some of its magic, and some of its tragic, but I had a good life all the way"!Thank you Terry for showing us the inside of the Waylon machine, Godspeed brother!

Having just finished Warren Zanes' official bio of Tom Petty, one of the best music books I've ever read (and I've read hundreds), my expectations with this book may admittedly have been too high. But still, Jennings' book is only for the most hardcore Waylon fans. The word I'd use is "meandering". There's no context, through-line, plot, whatever you want to call it. Just a bunch of stories - many of which are uninteresting and pedantic - told rapid fire, one after the other. "Then we did this, then we did *this*, then Waylon did this...". Terry sounds like a nice guy and his admiration for his dad is admirable, sincere and heartfelt, but he's just out of his league relative to the true masters of music storytelling (or any experienced biographer, for that matter). A skilled editor could've worked wonders here, although the resulting book would have been whittled down to something more like a pamphlet. If you're a Jennings completist, then by all means check this out. But if you're looking for a well-organized, enlightening read, check out the Petty bio. It's amazing.
