Tutu is a force of nature. I had the opportunity to hear him in person, and am convinced he's a saint on earth. This book traces his philosophies through many encounters and situations. What I don't like about it is that the entire book is a compilation of excerpts of papers he's written and speeches he's given. I'd rather they'd chosen fewer items and left them in their entirety.

Tutu writes with a good mastery of the language. He touches on many issues leaving the reader to contemplate their values and what matters. He advocates tolerance, inclusiveness, concern for the poor and marginalized and responsible leadership. He gives readers, particularly Africans, food for thought.

Desmond Tutu is such an amazing person and his perspective on issues ranging from Rwanda, Black Theology, Palestine, LGBT, and general reconciliation is beautiful and so refreshing in an era of accusations, partisanship, and intolerance. Good collection of his writings, although some are brief (one paragraph) excerpts; but they are well organized and good introductions to provide context.

Exquisite and challenging! A must read for all humanity.

If you want to see things from an objective standpoint, you need to read this book! Desmond Tutu perspective about some issues people disagree about today is very profound. As a Christian, Tutu made me have a rethink of so many values and believes I upheld previously. Certain dogmas are not Godly. There is only one commandment; love one another. I recommend this book for anyone who needs a fresh start and fresh way of thinking. See the world from a different perspective!

In November, Kate Vitasek and a team of co-authors released Strategic Sourcing in the New Economy: Harnessing the Potential of Sourcing Business Models for Modern Procurement. Vitasek is best known for her Vested Outsourcing series a books, which are responsible for helping professionals in all functions see the potential of outsourcing relationships aimed at accomplishing a new, more value-oriented type of result. While the Vested books naturally appeal to a procurement audience, you would hardly say that procurement is the main character. We appear in little more than an occasional walk on role – not central to the plot and not particularly memorable.The contrast between procurement’s role in the Vested series and the fact that we now have a book dedicated to our perspective and objectives is striking. While the Vested Way is open to all, clearly we seized an opportunity that has now led to a book all our own.The big shocker of the book – you might want to sit down for this – is the belief that the Porter’s Five Forces and Kraljic models are no longer well suited to the goals and objectives of a modern competitive enterprise. Michael and Peter are out. Their strategic models, which were revolutionary in their time, overly emphasize the need to build power relative to one’s business partners. Before you feel too badly about this change in circumstances, it is fair to point out that the models were introduced in 1979 and 1983 respectively. So, 37 and 33 years ago. They had a pretty good run, but it does seem logical that we should revisit our guiding principles every 3 – 4 decades or so.Enter ‘Sourcing Business Models’ from Vitasek and team. There are 7 Sourcing Business Models, defined by the authors as “the combination of two critical concepts: the contractual relationship framework you use to work with your supplier (transactional, relational, investment based) and economic model you use (transactional, output, or outcome based). Because the encompass a wide range of approaches on the sourcing continuum, the models and outcomes vary significantly. More importantly, there is no one fixed center point – such as power – that leads to homogeneous results across the models like you might have with either Porter or Kraljic.If there is a downside to Sourcing Business Models, it might be that procurement has too long been overly dependent upon models in general. We had a strategic sourcing process, until we follow it like a checklist and it became tactical. There is a risk that this is replacing one model addiction with another, but it is still an improvement. And if any change comes from this, perhaps it will be the lesson that we should revisit the models we use every 5-10 years rather that 30-40.In fact, one of my favorite quotes in the book, from Luke G. Williams, executive director of innovation and entrepreneurship and professor of marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business, is “Disruptive innovation is not just about following a process. It represents a mindset – a rebellious instinct to discard old business clichés and remake the market landscape.” If we assume that the authors agree with this sentiment, we have to think that they fully expect to see their models evolve or be replaced as circumstances require.Like the other books involving Vitasek, Strategic Sourcing in the New Economy is chock full of case studies – really good ones, where the companies are both identified by name and recognizable. An additional resource that I particularly like are the ‘Recommended Reading’ textboxes throughout the book. Not only do they make it easy to connect with additional information on each topic, their availability calls attention to the need to move on and do your own research to make the models and concepts your own.

Procurement professionals have come to realize that the longstanding, power-based approach of negotiating suppliers into submission has diminishing utility in today’s economy, yet few know how or when to move beyond that convention to something superior, or even what a better approach might be. While there is no single right answer to meet this challenge, there are arguably several wrong ones as evidenced by roughly half of all sourcing relationships failing to deliver desired value. Consequently, since no single sourcing model works in all situations it has become vital to understand your options and architect the optimal relationship that gives you the best shot at meeting your desired business outcomes. And, that’s exactly what makes this book indispensable; it provides the foundation necessary to succeed on the job today and in the decades to come. I highly recommend this book. I read it from the perspective of the public procurement professional. The continuum of sourcing solutions is very good and identifies the central considerations in their use: from transactional sourcing tools like requests for quotations, through preferred suppliers, performance-based contracts, to the relationship-based strategies like Vested.The appendices are excellent, with considerations for each of the sourcing strategies. The authors have unique, uncommon insight. For example, they advise including the CFO in development of contractual incentives, validating my experience with a state controller, a financial system's limited ability to handle incentive payments, and a culture suspicious of the use of performance incentive payments. Add the final chapter summarizing the Getting to We negotiation model, and the references to relevant ISO standards, and you have a terrific resource.

But for educational or real informational purposes forget it.This is the crap produced by the formula writers making a quick buck.Might be a synopsis of the description from a textbook on the subject, that fails to deliver any real information.On a flavour scale this would fail to reach a Vanilla rating.What it claims to deliver and what it delivers are two totally different things. What it promises on the cover "The Science of Happiness: Overcome Stress, Depression and Anxiety Using The Power of Music, Dance, Writing and Drawing" What it delivers are a lot of random descriptions in a semi-organized hierarchy, there is nothing here about actually using it, how to apply it. Basically a very poor quality sales brochure.

Sadly, I don't have time for a lengthy review, as this book truly deserves. I had downloaded it thinking it was a coloring book I could preview before making a decision to purchase a hard copy- I was wrong- and I'm *so* happy about that! For time I meant to use picking out a few coloring books, I stopped and read through this twice! The author is not long-winded, and gets to the point without unnecessary medical jargon that often makes these types of books less enjoyable to read (I hear that enough from my physicians, so I tend to enjoy conversational style writing; while this isn't written that informally, it's by no means a textbook). There's just the right amount of information provided as well; enough to explain the applicable 5 W's and how's, but just touching the surface. It's perfect to satisfy a basic curiosity or act as a jumping off point if you wanted to look up more. Truly, I wasn't expecting this in the first place, and then when I saw what it was I certainly didn't expect to learn anything I didn't already know or be impressed in any way... But I was dead wrong. So for anyone out there who uses any form of artistic therapy, be it coloring, music, dancing, I highly recommend this well written, thoughtfully researched book for a peek into the science behind why these things make you better. And if you aren't using these modalities, I recommend this book even more vigorously to you, so you might have a chance to seek the elusive happiness in your life.

I am very disappointed in the book which turned out to be a pamphlet... I already promised it as a gift to my niece so I'm reluctant to send it back... I'm disabled and can't send the book (pamphlet) back in a timely manner but like I said I am very disappointed!!! This purchase was not worth my money!!!

An Unkindness of Ghost is everything I hope for in science fiction. Solomon thoughtfully creates a world in which they explore issues of sexual identity, race, class, and historical trauma. At a time when the world seems to be crumbling on all sides I found myself drawing strength from Aster and Giselle who are driven to challenge official narratives and seek change. I recommend this book to anyone who loves science fiction or wants a new and challenging approach to thinking about social justice.

This is probably one of my favorite books I've read in the last year. An interesting and thoughtful take on not just the functioning scientifically, but socially, of a generation ship, and an in-depth treatment of race and discrimination in a genre that often hand-waves our species' history of it away.This is one of the first science fiction books in a long time where I saw myself in the protagonist. I was told going in that there were queer characters and that the main characters were black, but I was pleasantly surprised by a recognizably autistic protagonist. Often when people write about characters with difficulty recognizing their emotions, it feels false to me, but this felt very familiar to me.An Unkindness of Ghosts is interesting, and emotional, and clever, and although it's a hard read (the ship is basically Plantations In Space and Rivers Solomon does not shy away from the horrible aspects of that) it is very much worth it. It's satisfying and rewarding, even if it's not comfortable.

I struggled between a 3 and a 4 star rating. Aster, the main protagonist, is a character I would enjoy reading again. The idea of a generation ship roaming the galaxy without a sure destination as the set up for a plantation narrative drives home the hopelessness and claustrophobia of slavery/ethnic caste systems.The reasons I ultimately settled with a 3 star rating are as follows:P.O.V. switches: several times we move into the P.O.V. of other characters. Solomon writes these characters' voices well, but I felt like the switch in P.O.V. allowed an unwelcomed reprieve from Aster's conflicts.Temporal shifts: along with the change in P.O.V. there were flashbacks(?) to a younger Aster with a younger Giselle, but the transition into the flashback didn't signal to me I was in the past, so I spent several moments wondering what happened to the almost-detective story I was reading.I would recommend this to folks who like a hard sci-fi backdrop for their dystopian narratives. I would also recommend this to folka interested in a diverse cast, or want a narrative which doesn't shirk away from the horror of race-based caste systems which are perpetuated across human civilization.

A compelling debut. Speculative fiction with a literary, feminist edge, set in the distant future aboard a spacecraft tumbling, unmoored (physically and spiritually) through space.It's a stratified, segregated world on this space ship, ruled by a Sovereign with absolute power and cruelty. The story, however, is Astrid's --a Low worker, black-skinned, who is also a healer, the favorite of the Chief Surgeon, The. Astrid is, a powerful female character in a novel in which almost all the women characters, even Astrid's lost mother, Luna, are strong and strongly told. However, it is Theo I found most intriguing: devout, marked as effeminate by the Sovereign, with a secret past, yearning to do good, especially by Astrid but full of fear. I must admit: the middle of the novel plodded along, but Astrid's vivid remembrances of folk tales about animals, the Raven, stand out, and the story carried me through to the riveting, explosive end of this novel. Kudos! I look forward to reading more from Rivers Solomon.

As I age, it's more and more rare that a book so enraptures me so completely that I tear through it in a single sitting. An Unkindness of Ghosts is one of these rarities. The narrative feels fresh, and the characters are just breath-taking. There are no one-dimensional characters written here, and getting to know these characters is reason enough to read the book. Once you do read it, you'll find many others. As a scientist, I love all of the women of color scientists that I too rarely get to see in media. The story unabashedly confronts the brutality, trauma, and abuse humanity is capable of, in particular that white folks have proven ourselves to be capable of throughout history. The characters are irreparably marked by this oppressive brutality in a variety of ways while still managing to collaboratively cobble together moments of joy, revenge, and fulfillment. If you're looking for sci-fi with a fresh perspective or for an impeccably written narrative with impossibly compelling characters, pick this up.

My dear fellow readers: I’ve read quite a few books this year (as have we all), many of which I truly loved. But I have to say that this one is beyond question, my most favorite book of 2017.It is one of those rare finds that pulls you in—body and soul—after a mere page or two. Aster was magnificent as the protagonist. Such an odd character, but one I couldn’t help but love.The story takes place on a giant spaceship, one that’s been traveling for about 1,000 years. Solomon brilliantly used this ship as a microcosm for greater society. She expertly spoke volumes about human nature, gender, the stratification of people by economic status.

In 1834, a devout newlywed couple sailed from their native Georgia for Liberia to spread the Gospel. Most missionaries to Africa died, but the couple survived and persevered, working tirelessly if not always successfully to do good and returning to America in 1852, where their antislavery views did not prevent them from supporting the South as the Civil War loomed. John Leighton Wilson and his wife, Jane, had inherited slaves of their own and faced the dilemma of what to do with them before sailing off to save souls in Africa. Writing from the perspectives of white missionaries and African Americans (enslaved and freed) as well as Africans, historian Clarke offers a complex portrait of the countervailing forces of the nineteenth century as America grappled with the profound contradictions of slavery. By the Rivers of Water is a stunning piece of research written with literary elegance by Erskine Clarke. Anyone with roots in South Carolina, anyone who has interest in the early work of the Presbyterian missionaries, anyone who can trace their ancestry back to West Africa or has interest in the history of West Africa, or anyone who wishes to better understand the culture of slavery in the South would find this book to be a must read. I for one, happen to fit into all of those categories. Upon finishing reading Clarke’s book I found myself needing to just sit and be still in an effort to let it sink in chapter by chapter. There are so many things to consider and challenge our pre-conceptions of right and wrong and good vs. bad. The book will be with me for a long time to come.

In addition to By the Rivers of Water being a compelling story, it is a very important book about human nature and the power that cultures and environments have upon it. It also brings much understanding of the Atlantic Highways of the 19th century, race relations, slavery, missionary activity, and the Civil War. Erskine Clarke has a very sensitive and engaging style of writing. - Douglas M. Carpenter

This book complements both American Tapestry and Warmth of Other Suns, through a rich and detailed account of the influence of slavery, colonization and the missionary movement on 19th century American social and economic history.

The author described the book very well and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the time period before and after the Civil War. Descriptions of the slave trade were surprising to me.

In 1836, John Leighton Wilson and his wife Jane Bayard volunteered to serve as missionaries in West Africa. Both were from prosperous southern families and both owned slaves. Yet, as staunch Presbyterians, they felt it was their duty to bring Christianity to Africa. They first went to Maryland in Liberia, a settlement of free blacks from the United States. The settlement was backed by the American Colonization Movement whose purpose was to aid free African Americans to return to Africa. The Colonization Movement was not an Abolitionist Movement; rather their goal was to maintain Maryland's `whiteness'.The purpose of the Missionary Societies, however, was to minister to the African peoples. When friction arose between the settlers and the native Africans, Leighton found himself often in the middle of the frey but his sympathies were almost always on the side of the native Africans. The African Americans had absorbed western values which often clashed with those of the native Africans, especially on issues like land and property rights.The Wilsons wished to free their own slaves. However, under Georgia law, if a slave was freed, they had to leave the state. Many slaves were married to others on other plantations and, if they left, they would have to leave their families behind. The decision was finally made to allow the slaves the choice. They could come to Liberia, move to another state, or choose to remain a slave but with the option to take their freedom later. Most chose to move to Liberia.Underneath the Wilsons' actions, however, was a strong seam of racism. When problems arose in Maryland in Liberia, for example, they blamed it on the fact that the Colonization Movement had appointed a `coloured man' as governor. Later, when they were forced to return to the US for health reasons, they opposed the Southern demand for the reintroduction of the international slave trade but considered the election of Abraham Lincoln a sign of northern aggression against the south. When the southern states seceded and Fort Sumter was fired on signaling the beginning of the Civil War, they returned to Georgia to support the Confederacy. When the southern Presbyterian churches decided to also secede from the north and to put forward their declaration that slavery was not in opposition to the word of God, Leighton was one of the signers. Despite his opposition to the international slave trade, Leighton believed that southern whites 'understood' African Americans and their needs and that it should be left up to the southern states to decide how best to deal with the issue of slavery without interference from the north.By the Rivers of Water is a beautifully crafted history of the times with all of its contradictions. Author Erskine Clarke is a Theological historian and he handles all of these contradictions with sensitivity. He recognizes that the people about whom he writes were products of their time while never apologizing for their actions or beliefs. For anyone with an interest in history, this is an elegantly written, well-researched and well-documented portrayal of an important period in American history.

Right off the bat I want to say that this is a 5 star book. I've never seen or read anything like it. Seriously, it's almost a new genre. It is a history book; it's a missionary biography; it's micro-history; it's expansive history. I've read a lot of missionary biographies; I've read a lot of history books; but I've never read the two genres so closely intertwined.Clarke wrote a densely-written, historical account of the missionary endeavors of John Leighton and Jane Wilson into West Africa. That's the framework of the book, but it is also an historical documentation of the African-American colonies in Liberia and Gabon, the Gullah people on the coast of Georgia, the beginnings of African-American churches in South Carolina, and an historical look at the Atlantic highway in the years immediately preceding and during the Civil War. Absolutely fascinating.Leighton and Jane both came from large plantation and slave owning families in the deep south. This is their story of how they came together, and how Jane established schools in Africa, while Leighton fought the International Slave Trade and colonization, and translated portions of the Bible into Grebo and Mpongwe. However, when the Civil War started Leighton and Jane moved to the south to stand with their family.The author takes Leighton to task for departing from his moral vision after the Civil War. I probably would have cut him more slack. Given the fact that Leighton's family were plantation owners, he had to overcome a lot of cultural biases against going to Africa in the first place. Schools and reading were against the law for slaves, yet he gave his life to those tasks. I guess we all wish that the Civil War didn't produce so much bitterness in the aftermath.This book shows incredible scholarship and documentation. My organization was given the opportunity to buy a full hour of every Saturday afternoon time on a powerful and highly regarded radio station. My personal experience in talk radio programming was 15 years ago. So, I searched for books on talk radio program production and found nothing interesting but this book.Perhaps it sits alone on the shelf because present day producers are not interested in spreading the word and the resulting competition.THIS BOOK IS OUTSTANDING! The authors have more than two decades of experience as producers of talk and phone-in programs. It was a fabulous way for me to update my experience (even though the book is a few years old, the information is very timely). I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning how producers help to keep show hosts in the-know and out of trouble and anyone interested in a career in radio.

If you listen to the radio and ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes, this book is for you. The authors provide an often humorous description of the day to day activities that are done to bring the listener must-hear radio. Even the technical chapters were written in a way that somebody like me who has no connection to radio (other than listening) could understand and find interesting. Whether you are in the broadcasting field or just interested in radio, this book is well worth purchasing. The book was enjoyable to read and it gives the reader a new appreciation for what happens behind the scenes to bring the listener a good radio show.

I'm not really that familiar with radio production, but am more interested in the creative process in general, and I found this to be a worthwhile and engaging read. The writers are entertaining and personable, and make everything that they talk about exciting and interesting to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

As a radio producer for many years, this book shed light on various aspects of my work then that made me a better radio producer. From booking studio guests, to organising gameshows with all the logistics involved.

Great thought out book for anyone getting into a Radio Producer role. Unfortunately i was paid minimum wage to work from 5-8am on a radio show.

Someone called it "the Radio Producer's Bible" I think I now understand why. Not just for producers but for on-air talent.

From what I have read so far, they explain all details about the in's and out's of producing your own show. I have learned many things so far as well it confirms what I already do. Well done and put together.

While I thought the detail was very complete, I think the beginning is slightly out of date. Thanks enjoyed the work!

Paul Washer's 55-page booklet, Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church, is a free Kindle download I picked up four years ago. It's actually a sermon he preached at a conference in Atlanta nearly a decade ago. Although I found the book to be a good read, I could see many Christians being offended by Washer's direct charges against the American church. Paul Washer was a missionary in Peru for ten years, and today he preaches passionately against false gospels. After a brief introduction, the Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church is organized in the following chapters:1. A Denial of the Sufficiency of Scripture2. An Ignorance of God3. A Failure to Address Man's Malady4. An Ignorance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ5. An Unbiblical Gospel Invitation6. An Ignorance Regarding the Nature of the Church7. A Lack of Compassionate Church Discipline8. A Silence on Separation9. A Replacement of the Scriptures Regarding the Family10. However, if you are seeking something with lots of Scripture and much to ponder, I recommend checking out the book.

Yes, its broad-brushed. Yes, there are times when it is a little too harsh. Yes, some details may be applied in different ways according to context. There's no doubt Paul Washer is an intense guy. But there is also no doubt to me that he has his finger on the pulse of the American church and he has found but a very faint heartbeat. Washer's ten indictments are nothing new and all of them may not apply to us or to our church situations but I urge Christian readers to give Washer's thoughts a fair hearing. I put Paul Washer in the category of men like Leonard Ravenhill and Keith Green, of preachers like AW Tozer and Vance Havner. What they said wasn't always just right, but it was always memorable and the part that was right had such a way of getting to the heart of things that you couldn't help but be moved. I am thankful for brother Washer and pray that I will take to heart the message of this book.

This is the kind of message the church needs. And it is so, because it is from the Bible, exclusively. Al Christians should be aware of the dangers of not having the Word of God as their rule of life. The sufficient Word is the place to know the person of Jesus and the way to properly worship Him. This is a strong message that is similar, in a sense, of Johnathan Edwards' 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God'. The church needs this message. We need such a message. I needed that message. A must read book!

Much like Ravenhill and Tozer, Paul Washer is not one to hold back. His book "Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church" is a great example. In this short book, you will find much to challenge you. I don't agree with every perspective Washer has, but honestly hearing the hard-hitting message is refreshing in a day where so much of Christian publishing seems very weak and overly consoling. Don't get me wrong, we do need comfort. But there are also times when we need to be shaken deeply.The 10 indictments are as follows:1. A denial of the sufficiency of Scripture2. An ignorance of God3. A failure to address man's malady4. An ignorance of the gospel of Jesus Christ5. An unbiblical gospel invitation6. An ignorance regarding the nature of the church7. A lack of compassionate church discipline8. A silence on separation9. A replacement of the scriptures regarding the family10. Pastors malnourished in the word of GodI do struggle some with books that are as hard-hitting as this one. There is always the danger of feeling like we are not doing enough and working our way into a legalistic, and even condemning, state of life. We are all called to different ways of living out our calling and life. Some are called to a more separate way of life, while others are not. Some can drop everything and become what we normally think of as a full-time minister (really we are all full-time ministers regardless of our occupation), but not all are called to that level of sacrifice. If not balanced with a firm understanding of grace, a book like this can cause people to struggle with condemnation rather than conviction, hence the four-star rating. Still, we could all use a little more reading that makes us search ourselves more closely.If you want a challenging read that will stir your heart, pick up this book.

Paul Washer's love for Christ is so intimate it is almost painful. Such a yearning, such a longing to become more like Christ everyday. Pauls Washer has presented some very important facts about the state of the church, the state of evangelism and he backs every single point with the Word of God. Paul is right when he said there is but one Gospel, the Gospel of Christ. Because of our love for Christ, we will be moved to be obedient to His word. I could sit here and write a complete book review on Washer's book, however what I will say is simply that I felt like I have already been to church reading his book, I was so humbled and moved by his sincere urging. I noticed many have referred to Paul Washer's "hate". What hate? I did not read anything that made me believe that he hated, but that he is urging the church as a whole to get right with God. We do not need a counterfeit gospel. The gospel should not be for sale. Christ freely gave. We are saved by the grace of God, and as Paul pointed out, the gospel of Christ, salvation, atonement, regeneration, holiness, etc. is hardly ever mentioned anymore. What are the people being saved from? And why? We can agree to disagree but the Bible states that it is the word of God. If we cannot trust the scriptures and take them literally, why read them at all? May God continue to bless and use Paul Washer.
