About the Author

Timothy Keller was born and raised in Pennsylvania and educated at Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. His first pastorate was in Hopewell, Virginia. In 1989 he started Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City with his wife, Kathy, and their three sons. Today, Redeemer has nearly six thousand regular Sunday attendees and has helped to start more than three hundred new churches around the world. He is the author of Hidden Christmas, Making Sense of God, and The Songs of Jesus, as well as The Meaning of Marriage, The Prodigal God, and The Reason for God, among others.   Kathy Keller received her MA in theological studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Highly Recommended! I've enjoyed this deep, insightful devotional by Timothy Keller! Each day's devotion is just right, having the right amount of material, being deep enough, full of insight, but not overly long. It is so thought provoking that the reader can meditate on the information and the verses taught all throughout the day. It is set up similar to Keller's amazing and well received devotional Songs of Jesus. I've enjoyed that devotional immensely for the last few years. Songs of Jesus helps the believer meditate through the Psalms! I would recommend that book as well if you do not have it yet! This book is organized a little differently. In Songs of Jesus, Keller breaks up the sections in order systematically, from Psalm 1 all the way to the end of Psalm 150. In this devotional Keller selects a portion of Proverbs to read each day and to medicate on. Then he gives a teaching on that topic, using his own insights, other bible verses, and ends with a prayer!The sections are not divided as in Songs of Jesus in order by Chapters. It does not begin with proverbs 1 and end with proverbs 31. He divides the sections into topics, such as :1- Knowing Wisdom: What is Wisdom2-Knowing Wisdom: What is Foolishness3- How do we become Wise4-The Fear of the Lord5-Knowing the Heart; Understanding the Heart6-Understanding Emotion7- Seven Deadly Sins: Anger, Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Sloth, Greed, Lust each having its own section8-Knowing the Times and Seasons: Guidance, Planning, and Decision Making - This part is very practical and awesome!9-Insights for Our Age.10-Marriage11-Sex12- Parenting13- Money14 Knowing Jesus, The True Wisdom of God.For example, the reading for November 6, Keller teaches on Proverbs 30: 8-9 "Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread, Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say 'Who is the LORD?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. Keller goes on to say "Money can corrupt us not only by its presence but by its absence. He then explains these verses in more detail and how we can apply this verse to our lives, answering questions including what it means by daily bread and should we as Christians divest ourselves of all money beyond a simple lifestyle? Keller continues " What it does mean is at least this: Our homes, clothing, and lifestyle should be modest within our circle and neighborhood so we can be as generous as possible. The Christian community should model to the world as society in which wealth and possessions are seen as tools for serving others and not as a means of personal advancement and fulfillment." He also quotes scriptures outside of Proverbs including 1 Timothy 6 about money and 1 Peter 2: 7 about our Lord Jesus Christ being our true precious treasure! Of course Tim goes deeper into this topic for this day and for the following days!So far I am really enjoying this devotional! The way it's organized by topics works really well! For this review I've read several days of this month, plus reading over selected topics. I've especially enjoyed the topics about Money and Knowing Jesus, the True Wisdom of God. This devotional goes very deep and is very thought provoking and edifying. It is meant to be read daily. It is saturated with scripture, including many scriptures outside of proverbs. I recommend it to all who love to spend time with the Lord. All of us need God's Wisdom ! As James wrote "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally without reproach, and it will be given to you . But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord." James 1: 5-7

Just came home to find this in its package! I preordered it as soon as I had the option to. I purchased " The Songs of JESUS " last year in November and it has been so great to use through out 2017. Do yourself a favor and purchase both! Meditate on them daily! As a 23 year old male that is a Firefighter, I can definitely say I'm excited to start using " God's Windom for navigating life ". I mean, who wouldn't want the book of knowledge in a daily devotional broken down by Tim Keller! Especially in today's world!

Definitely not the typical tripe seen in mass churches today or put out by the surface evangelical establishment. These are penetrating, provocative daily expositions on real world matters that deeply probe into questions of values, moral behavior, the meaning of human life, and right conduct. Must have wisdom literature distilled by Keller for truth seekers the world over. Could not more highly recommend.

SPOILER ALERTThis devotional book is invaluable in gaining new and different perspectives. It relies heavily on the authors vast knowlege and insight. I loved the number of resources quoted and their diversity. I highly recommed this book.Here is the spolier from the last day...Prayer: Lord, I have learned that wisdom is only a by-product of wanting something more than wisdom—to see God! Aim at knowing you, and you get wisdom thrown in. Aim just at wisdom—in order to be successful—and you get neither. At last I see it. It took me long enough. I praise you for your patience with me. Amen.

I bought this as a gift for my 16-year-old daughter and she has thoroughly enjoyed these devotionals. She says they are the perfect length for a busy teen and she has been very encouraged by them. She reads one every night and we will often discuss what she has learned.

Each day has only one small page of two or three paragraphs, but if you think that means it’s just a quick light read you couldn’t be more wrong. Yes, it uses Proverbs as the basis, but other verses are used to reinforce, contrast or expand upon the particular verse in Proverbs.And the treatment is often very illuminating with insights way beyond the trivial. And the approach is very personal, not academic - so this is not a book intending to educate you about the wisdom in Proverbs but rather to use the wisdom in Proverbs for spiritual growth in a very real down to earth way. Excellent! I never can read just one “day” per day. There is so much to ponder and give serious thought to. Highly recommended.

I love everything Tim Keller, from his sermons to his books, but this daily devotional really pierces the heart. I read his Psalm devotional two years in a row, before this book came out and it really helped me. I think the Proverbs devotional is even better. The Psalms will help you heal, the Proverbs will perform surgery on your heart. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Great daily reading.

I love Keller's Songs of Jesus (a yearly devotional of the Psalms), which I read every morning. I wanted this devotional of Proverbs to read every night. Keller, in my opinion, is excellent - very thought provoking, a modern C.S. Lewis.

My daughter really loved this book. She especially enjoyed lifting the flaps to see what was hiding underneath. Excellent book for any child, but especially for children who have trouble staying engaged.

I purchased this cookbook for me and one for my daughter for Christmas. She is going to be so happy to get this as one of her gifts. This will give her more ways to use her rice cooker.

If you have never included rice in your meals this is the product to have, from the midwest we were potato based for meals, now we have expanded our menu. I would recommend this product to everyone.

Very useful if you only have a rice cooker to cook stuff in (like if you're in a dorm)Dishes need some preparation, but they're worth it.I easily found the ingredients required, probably because I'm in Asia.

First of all, you need a basic rice cooker not one with extra features. I expected to get recipes to put ingredients into the rice or on top of a stand in the rice cooker and turn on the cooker and forget about it. Instead, most of the recipes, involved cooking in the rice cooker, taking the ingredients out adding rice, and turning it off and on. There were too many steps and also meant I had to buy another rice cooker. Its just not what I expected.

This book is packed with innovative and tasty recipes, but American cooks with little experience or access to Asian ingredients may find this book a challenge. Ingredient lists go beyond soy sauce and Chinese cooking wine; lychee, gojiberries and a variety of mushrooms also show up. Recipes with seafood - shrimp, scallops and fish are heavily represented. Dorm cooks looking for a cookbook to walk them through macaroni and cheese in their rice cookers should look for a more basic manual. Braver souls with a pantry and a willingness to explore their one pot wonder will be rewarded handsomely.

This is an ok place to start after you get a rice cooker. Definitely a good companion to give with a rice maker to a college kid going off. Turns a uni-tasker to an all around cooking item.

This is a disappointing and not very useful book. First, Duhigg sets us up with his introduction about how super-productive people like Atul Gawande are and promises that he'll deliver their secrets. The book is full of anecdotes and their relation to research. There's little to no summarizing with the steps a person should take to be smarter, faster, and better. As a reference book, it's useless because you have to wade through hundreds of pages of text to find any nuggets.The clincher for me was when I got to the end and read his appendix. This was where he was supposed to tell us how he put the lessons of the book into practice as he wrote the book. It's where he was supposed to tell us how we all can manage the load of commitments we have to be as productive as Gawande, a best-selling author, a well-known surgeon, a Harvard faculty member, an advisor to the World Health Organization...But it never happened. Instead of finding out how Duhigg managed the responsibilities of work, family, and personal needs, we found out how he organized and managed to write the book. Nope. As far as I know, his family life fell apart and his co-workers hate him for shirking his duties.In short, this book could have been much better in many ways. Don't waste your money or your time.

Mastering what separates “the merely busy from the genuinely productive”In Smarter Faster Better, Charles Duhigg sets the table: Various advances in communications and technology are supposed to make our lives easier. “Instead, they often seem to fill o0ur days with more work and stress. In part, that’s because we’ve been paying attention to the wrong innovations. We’ve been staring at the tools of productivity — the gadgets and apps and complicated filing systems for keeping track of various to-do lists — rather than the lessons those technologies are trying to teach us…This book is about how to recognize the choices that fuel true productivity…This is a book about how to become smarter, faster, and better at everything you do.”He focuses on — and devotes a separate chapter to — “a handful of key insights” shared by hundreds of poker players, airline pilots, military generals, executives, and cognitive scientists who kept mentioning the same concepts again and again and again. In this book, he explores “the eight ideas that seem most important to expanding productivity.” Here they are, accompanied by my own annotations:1. Motivation: Make choices that place you in control of a situation. If empowered, you will speak and act more decisively and accelerate gaining the respect and trust of others.2. Charles Duhigg is a good journalist (his share of a Pulitzer Prize proves that), and his book Smarter Faster Better is a good read. I enjoyed reading it. It's inspiring and insightful.But the book promises to be more than just entertainment. The title takes off the Olympic motto: Citius Altius Fortius (Faster Higher Stronger), and its cover shows a runner smartly running directly to the center of a maze. A self-help, self-improvement type of book, it promises "the secrets of being productive in life and business". That I don't think the book delivers.Why not? The book is full of stories. Anecdotes. Case studies. Whatever you want to call them. Charles Duhigg researches a lot of disparate incidents involving various people, and tries to bring them together to show us how to draw on other people's experiences to be more productive. But he fails.That's because you can pull out of anecdotes pretty much anything you want to. I can find an anecdote to support any argument I want to make. Anecdotes are like statistics. As Simpson's paradox says, often the same statistics can be used to show something and its exact opposite. The same with anecdotes.Take Charles Duhigg's use of the life of Rosa Parks in his book The Power of Habit. He says that she shows the power of social habits. He tells of how her husband said she was so social she rarely ate dinner at home, instead eating at the home of friends. That gave her the social strength to start a movement.But Susan Cain (a blurber for this book) in her book Quiet, tells the story of Rosa Parks to support her argument of the power of introverts. While extroverts tend to gain their energy in social situations, introverts typically recharge through solitude and feel drained from too much stimulation. The same person, but one author sees her as a social butterfly and another as an introvert who sought solitude.That's not to say that Charles Duhigg or Susan Cain is wrong. And I don't want to push this example too strongly. But I do think that many authors, and most TED talk speakers, depend too much on anecdote and story telling to persuade, while they would do better to just entertain. I have no problem using anecdotes to pump people up. But to try to derive secrets from them seems a step too far.Take another example, this one from this book. Charles Duhigg uses the example of the 2009 Air France Flight 447 jetliner crash in the Atlantic as an example of "cognitive tunneling" and poor mental models. In that tragic accident, the Airbus A330 plane was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris and ran into bad weather. The plane was flying fine, but its pitot tubes apparently froze up and gave the pilots the wrong speed information. They acted on that wrong information, put the plane into a stall, and fell into the ocean.But does that anecdote unequivocally show cognitive tunneling? And can one take from that anecdote a lesson about how not to cognitively tunnel? I don't see how. I've read several other accounts of that Air France accident, and none of them blamed it on cognitive tunneling (although one did mention tunnel vision as one of many factors).The Air France accident seems to me more like what Charles Perrow described in Normal Accidents: Living With High-Risk Technologies. Just like with the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, people do not do well when their instruments lie to them about situations they cannot see with their eyes. Another account blames the Air France accident mainly on over-reliance on automated systems in the Airbus planes. (William Langewiesche's article in Vanity Fair is fascinating reading.)My point is that any anecdote can, by its nature, be interpreted in many different ways. Just like in the old fable six blind men saw six different things in an elephant. None were wrong, yet none were right.Rather than books like this one, I prefer my anecdotes in the form of biographies. When I read a good biography, or a good history, the author presents a life or a series of stories in a way that the reader can draw their own conclusions. I'm sure the author's slant comes through to some extent.But when I read a book by someone like David Halberstam or David McCullough, I usually feel as though I read a gem that provides lessons for my life. I didn't get that with this book. To me, at least, it seemed too shallow, too broad, and too pushy. Not deep, focused, and subtle.

I bought this book to assist myself in learning Spanish as it is written in both languages. It is interpreted in small paragraphs which made it very easy to comprehend and learn new words.

What a beautiful story. I read it with my daughter and we loved the pictures and story. Especially liked that it was both in English and Spanish.

Book is easy to read. Perfect for my niece. I definitely, recommend this book.
