I got this book as a gift and just started to read the first page to see if I'd like it. I haven't put it down since, other than to write this review. Great book. I really love it. The writing style is keeping me engage, and the mystery is intriguing. I highly recommend it!Update:Was a bit disappointed in the ending. I saw it coming.

I read this book by a new author (to me) and was totally blown away. It was such a fun read. I love the characters and am looking forward to getting to know them. I have bought all 11 books in this series. I am on book 4 now and it is still great and fun reading. It is not War and Peace , but then I don't want War and Peace !! Great writing, great characters, great mystery, funny was what I wanted and I got in spades.

Although I am not normally a fan of the murder mystery/lawyer type of novels, this was a good book and I enjoyed it. It was suggested to me by a friend who lives in NJ, where I spent some "x" years - so, many of the places mentioned are familiar to me, as this book is set in the NJ suburbs of NYC.I like the author's writing style, and he fills in plenty of details so that you, the reader, actually feel you are at the locations being described.I also found the "hero" to be likeable - one of the other things that resonates with me - I mean, who can dislike somebody who is a dog lover!I did find one of those little errors that bugs me - on page 30 (paperback edition) the author writes "I go through the process of checking in and wait until the guard, Danny, comes to bring me to the cell block." If you are going from the location where you are physically located then the proper word to use is "take" not "bring". This seems to be a common error made in the NJ/NYC area - I once won a five dollar bet with one of my NYC educated employees who insisted that there was no difference between the two words and that they could be used interchangeably . Not true! As the Oxford Dictionaries says - "The essential difference between these two words is that bring implies movement towards someone or something: Bring your instrument with you when you come over. Whereas take implies movement away from someone or something: Take your belongings with you when you're leaving." I know - petty, but it still bugged me when I realized that this error was not picked up in proofing process.Still, this is a good book and makes for a quite enjoyable read.

Good writing but trite plotting.I really enjoyed the humor and dialogue, but the basis of the mystery ( an old photograph) just didn't make sense.Why was it taken, why kept?And I'm really tired of reading about investigators ( be they lawyers, detectives, etc.) always getting beaten up and shot at , but always making speedy and miraculous recoveries which barely slow them down. It's trite, overused and puerile. This writer is too talented to fall into this pattern. Try being original! And making your plots believable!

This is a cute little story...a joke cracking young attorney who loves baseball and Golden Retrievers is charged with carrying out his father's last wish to defend a wrongly-convicted man who has been behind bars for seven years. That being said, don't expect a John Grisham or Scott Turorw, ( And for that matter, don't expect a lot of quality dog time, either. ) What Open and Shut does have are thinly drawn characters, numerous holes in the story line and so many far-fetched plot lines and strange co-incidences that reading it requires a huge suspension of disbelief to make me want to read another "Andy Carpenter Mystery." Even if he does have a great dog.

First I have a problem with the book cover which gives the impression of a dog aided sleuth. Far from it as his dog is only mentioned a few times, practically nonessential. The there is Andy’s character who annoys this reader with his stupid supposedly comical remarks, none of which I find funny. The crime itself have me wishing to know the outcome which is the reason for an average 3 stars. Not continuing with the series unless the comical relief is reined in

Quick witted and fast-paced with believable characters, the novel proves interesting and entertaining. However, outside of a few well placed sentences of Carpenter’s love for his Golden Retriever, Tara, the story has very little to do with Tara. Although the book in no way resembles Spencer Quinn’s, “Chet and Bernie,” series, nor Bruce Cameron’s “A Dog’s Purpose,” series, Rosenfelt still comes across as a genuine dog lover and the few descriptions of Tara are beautiful written, warm and sweet.Story: “Open And Shut,” introduces Andy Carpenter, a defense attorney who defends an indefensible client accused of committing a heinous murder. After an interesting discovery in his father’s home, Andy comes upon information that will not only possibly help his client, but will change Andy’s life, as he knows it.

I love detective stories when one of the prime characters is a dog! I was lead to believe that the Golden Retriever was a big part of this story.Unfortunately, that is not the case. The dog named "Tara" is only mentioned four or five times and had absolutely nothing todo with the plot. Those looking for a good story about man and his dog solving crime won't find it here. Had I known that Tara was justmentioned and not featured this book would not have been ordered. Sorry.

Robert B Parker fans - you're going to love this series! I have been looking for a replacement for my beloved Spenser, Hawk and Jesse Stone books to no avail. Until I happened on this. The series reads like a Parker oeuvre - great characters, witty dialog, and an original twist which is that the protagonist does dog rescue. Let's face it, RBP got formulaic with his plots, and these tend to as well, but it doesn't matter because there's a lot of intelligent stuff in here, plus the dialog is great. I am going to read everything he wrote, and then I'll be sad! I highly recommend them and have not been bored for one second, which is more than I can say for 99% of the books I now read in an effort to find something I like.
