The photos in this book are awe-inspiring. My husband grabbed hold of this book shortly after I unpacked it. A half hour later, he had tears in his eyes. That is saying something. I'm not sure that I've ever seen him take to a picture book so quickly and react to it so emotionally. Now that I've looked and read through it myself, I can say that the photos make one pause, make one think. These are photos that stick with you. They are not static--everything and anything but still.Weeks later, the book has not yet seen a shelf in our library, and we are still discussing some of the pictures. Yet, sometimes, looking through the pages, there just are no words to express what's pictured there.I will sincerely say that this is the best "coffee table" book that I've ever come across. If you are looking for something like this for yourself or for gifting, I don't think you could do better.*I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
In the ever-changing world of digital photography, it’s easy to snag the perfect photograph, right? Wrong and not so fast as they say, because it still takes a special eye to capture the very essence of the natural world around us in a photograph. There are certain criteria that the judges in the Big Picture Natural World Photography Competition have. A committee must “evaluate the composition of forms and natural patterns, shifts of light and focus, and contrasts of color that enhance the drama, surprise, and singularity of the scene.†For me, as with many others, one knows instinctively when a photographer has taken an award-winning snapshot of our natural world.I’m a world-class browser when it comes to books like these, books that are normally dubbed “coffee table†books. The size fits perfectly in my hands, unlike some of the massive art books I own. I can sit and read to my heart’s content, learning not only about the subject matter, but also a bit about the photographers and what those judges think. For example, when looking at Marco Urso’s amazing shot of some pelicans, judge Neil Ever Osborne comments that Urso’s “patience and foresight freeze the one second when every element is where it should be.†The expert commentary makes me into an armchair critic and aficionado rolled into one. I could easily see his point and gained new appreciation for the pelican portrait.Some of the photographs in this book are so surreal, they look like a canvas rather than a photograph. The backgrounds are astonishing and some critters looked poised. Mac Stone’s eastern corn snake (‘Pantheophis guttatus’) just happens to be one of them. The caption says something about nature being the “ultimate artist†and none of us would argue with that statement. Without describing the whole book, the reader / browser is definitely in for a treat. In the front of the book there’s a infographic that shows us where these photographs were taken and lines indicate the setting (In the water, in the air, on land, wild places, art of nature, and human / nature.†In the back of the book are photographs and mini-bios of each photographer. I loved this one and, if one wants to browse the amazing world of photography, this is definitely a winning collection!This book courtesy of the publisher.

From the very first photo, it's clear that the book is full of wonders.Honestly, this has some of the most gorgeous photos I've ever seen and they give such an amazing view of our natural world.Even the more common animals look extraordinary here, and the rarer ones are mind-blowing. This book is filled with spectacular nature photographs that will delight any enthusiast. It’s pulled together by the California Academy of Sciences where they have an annual BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition. The book is a collection of the winning photographs. The first image is of a polar bear just as she’s about to break the surface of the water looking directly through the camera lens with a soft pink glow of the horizon with the low sun in the background. As breathtaking as it is, you’re immediately aware of the position of the photographer in his tiny boat.Each photograph is accompanied by the photographer’s story and thoughts from the academy scientists that deepen your understanding of what you’re seeing.I found the backstories of what went into those shots absolutely fascinating. The photographers are braving the elements and wildlife, and then place their position and timing bets based on meticulous studies, and even with the best planning, still require all the luck in the world for it to work out. There are a few photos of the photographers in their natural habitat in the book and those give you a glimpse of their planning process.At the end of the book, they introduce you to each of these photographers and tell you where they’re from and what their specialty is.I’ll be sure to add a trip to the Academy of Sciences to my next San Francisco trip. They have a planetarium, aquarium and natural history museum right at Golden Gate Park.
